That's quite funny. The good thing about military service jokes is that you generally don't need to embellish them, the simple truth is hilarious. There was a series of books - described as subversive first-hand accounts - that Spike Milligan wrote about his WWII army career in the artillery, which had me in stitches!

I wonder when Robert Maclaren was actually commissioned - a topic the paymaster ignored, clearly a typo originally. I'd say probably 1966 : 2nd lieutenant to Lt Colonel over 35 years is reasonable with about 2000 BGP per year of service credited. I don't know what that buys you in Pommyland but it's a nice ~ $132K+ AUD Downunder (provided it's not taxed by Canberra, always a possibility). Here that will get you a real nice car, say a top notch Ford Mustang ('Bullitt' color scheme)  with some spare for the insurance, services and running costs for a good decade.
