Just an update -- for the past couple of months we have been preparing a new and better (more sensitive -- can see farther) search code. This incorporates all the good changes from the Windows Beta test app. Currently we have not yet started distributing this new search code and newly prepared S4 data because we are having trouble getting the new validator to work correctly. But hopefullly this will be fixed soon and then E@H users will be getting a new app with all the fixes, plus more data and a more sensitive search.

Thanks for your patience. It's hard work to get all the BOINC bits to work properly together.

Cheers,
Bruce

Bruce,

Thank you for the update! A lot of us have been wondering and waiting to hear something. But, it sounds like the new application is still a ways away.

I hope you have read Michael Roycraft's "Wish List" suggestion by now. (If not, please do.) And, I hope you will consider it as a "Stop Gap" measure before the new app is released. The "graphics bug business" is really picking up on the Message Boards now that Seti Classic is closing down. The current Beta could really help put an end to those problems (and keep all those new users happy and crunching). Please think about it.

Quick question - will the more sensitive code be only used on new S4 data, or can it be used to recheck older data too?

New S4 data only.

Data is somewhat like a car. When you have an old clunky one, and a new shiny one, you tend to lose interest in the old clunker. In this case, S4 data is more sensitive than S1-S3, so we are our interest in S3 is fading. Not to say that we wouldn't ever go back to it, but this would be mostly for pedagogic purposes and not for discovery.

Thakyou for the news, and enlightening reply to my question. Good luck with the validator coding too.

As to the shiny new car, I will admire it from a distance on my Penny-Farthing ;)

Hi
I have an ATI card and was having no luck with the screensaver, I downloaded the beta version but nothing happened until I re-booted and - WHAM- there it was in all its glory.
I am well pleased - it appears to be working perfectly

Greetings to all,

I'm still not getting the EaH graphics, even though I've been running 0.18 since it became available. What can I do to troubleshoot this problem? I will be happy to post or e-mail any logs or messages as you may request.

Kind regards,

Daniel

Daniel,

I send you a reply in email, did you not get it? I'll resend it to make sure.

The gist of it is that the "Failed to open checkpoint-file for writing. Exiting." is from some other application interfering with BOINC (and Einstein). It also is the cause for the "couldn't write state file" messages.

Check your firewall/anti-virus/file backup software to make sure BOINC is excluded, and that the software is up to date.

The graphics is another issue. What happens when you click "Show graphics"? What happens when you click the "preview" button when setting the BOINC screensaver? If the starsphere doesn't come up, perhaps you need newer drivers for your graphics card.

Walt

Hello Walt and company,

Thank you for your patience as I try to understand and solve this problem.

Walt, yes, I received your most recent e-mail and will reply to it directly.

Firewall: a descendent of Zone Alarm. I just checked it again and BOINC is (and has been) fully access-enabled. Anti-Virus: a variant of Symantec AV. I just went through the configuration and could not find any program-specific settings that would interfere with BOINC. Both are as up-to-date as the corporate distribution permits.

Clicking on "Show graphics" (when that button is enabled) gives me a nifty little window with nifty graphics. When that button is enabled, clicking "Preview" in the screen-saver config shows me the E@H screensaver in all its glory. If I let it time out to start the screen saver, I get a black screen.

At one time when I awoke the machine from this black screen I briefly saw a flash of the desired graphics, as if it had been covered by a black curtain. This happened only once. It does not appear that the LCD is being powered down.

Most of the time the "Show graphics" button is not enabled. In this case when I use the "Preview" button I see the graphic shown here. When I let the machine time out, I still get a black screen.

To view the symptoms across the other dimension of the matrix:

  • * Screen Saver "real" -- always black screen
    * Screen Saver "preview" -- star graphics or BOINC logo, depending on . . .
    * "Show Graphics" button -- sometimes enabled, most of the time not enabled
    works as expected when enabled

I've gone through my screen saver settings ("Go to black screen" not checked, "Minutes" set to 5) and through all the advanced power management settings. Other screen savers, are visible, i.e. not hidden by a black curtain.

Graphics drivers: the latest available on the ThinkPad website.

I even went through the exercise of uninstalling and re-installing BOINC and the beta E@H several times, even to the point of renaming the installation directory and searching the registry for BOINC keys. This seems to have had no affect: the symptoms remain unchanged.

Thanks again for your help.

Kind regards,

Daniel

Hello Just a note - I'm

Hello

Just a note - I'm still using the 4.79 version, but have noticed that the WU time has increased from around 8 hours 50 minutes to nine hours 5 minutes - this started with the flurry of upgrades to BOINC recently and has culminated with version 5.2.13 of BOINC. In all cases I have been running a VERY clean, slighty tweaked box, and even gone as far as to format and re-install Windoze in an attempt to ensure this (in fact Billy gates won't let me reformat any more using this licence, so no more of that for the moment...). To recap, from the older version of BOINC from around a week back until now, my WU times now take 15 minutes longer.

Einstein 0.18 did'nt fixed an unrecoverable error, which occurs when sreensaver runs on my AMD Sempron(tm) 2400+ with Windows XP Professional, SP 2, and NIVIDA Geforce FX 5200 under 7.8.0.1. driver.
Before, I had the same error on Einstein 4.79 with older graphic card driver.
Other projects L@H and S@H work properly.

Messages from screen:
1.Application error. Memory can't be written.
2.2005-10-02 09:59:41|Einstein@Home|Unrecoverable error for result l1_1317.0__1317.4_0.1_T09_S4lB_2 ( - exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)

Regards

Does this happen at random or when you do something? Or perhaps when BOINC does something? Check BOINC's log and see what else is happening around the same time as the error.

Besides the log, does the "Application error. Memory can't be written" message have any addresses associated with it? Like the instruction that gets the error? Would help a lot in figuring out where the error occurs.

Walt

Hello Walt,
I'm coming back after crunching more than 3000 points since error from 2005-10-02. I had again 2 times the same "Unrecoverable errors" and message boxes with exactly the same texts(translation from Polish):

First message box: einstein_0.18_windows_intelx86exe_Application error
Second message box: "Instruction from "0x6970986e" relates to memory adress "0x00000008". Memory can't be written. Press OK button to terminate application"

Logs(in the places with points "..." there were only "Deferring communication" messages from Einstein):

1 case
2005-10-16 21:51:39 [Einstein@Home] init_op_project failed, error -113
2005-10-16 21:51:39 [Einstein@Home] Deferring communication with project for 1 minutes and 0 seconds

2005-10-22 10:12:16 [Einstein@Home] Deferring communication with project for 1 minutes and 0 seconds

2 case

2005-11-07 00:42:52 [Einstein@Home] Scheduler request to http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/EinsteinAtHome_cgi/cgi failed
2005-11-07 00:42:52 [Einstein@Home] No schedulers responded
2005-11-07 00:42:53 [Einstein@Home] Deferring communication with project for 48 minutes and 49 seconds
...

2005-11-11 14:11:29 [Einstein@Home] Deferring communication with project for 1 minutes and 0 seconds

Exactly as with former errors I did'nt find any important messages in Event Viewer. Then I switched off the BOINC screen saver and had'nt any error with Einstein since then.
