Having problems with graphics

Having problems with graphics on IBM Thinkpad T30 running Windows XP Professional version 2003 Service Pack 2. Show Graphics window works ok but screen saver does not. Simple displays a black void. If I do not use the BOINC screensaver, the screensaver works normally but my screen blank after 20 minutes does not. Removing Einstein from BOIC resolves the problem.

Are you having those problems with the beta test application (thats what this thread is about).

If you're running the regular one (4.79), check here for a description of the beta test app. Try running it and see if the screensaver problem goes away.

As for the BOINC screensaver, does it work right when Seti is running? That is, you get the Seti@Home graphics when its running and you get a blank screen when Einstein@Home is running? What about CPDN?

Hi Robert,

Does it work properly when Seti is running?

You could check your power savings options. In the Display Properties dialog, Screensaver tab, at the botton is "Power". Click it and you get the "Power Options Properties" dialog. What does it show for "turn off monitor"?

OK, some things to check.

When you installed the beta application, did you stop and start BOINC? Take a look in Boinc Managers Message tab, you should see this message:

Einstein@Home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform

Its near the top, after the data dir statement and before the processor, memory and disk space info.

If you don't see it, then you're still running the old Einstein version (4.79). You can also check the work tab for the version its using, its in the Application column.

If you see "Einstein 4.79" then you're still using the old version.

Beware!!
If you did install the beta version, but didn't restart BOINC, and now have workunits being processed by 4.79 then don't restart BOINC. All the workunits you have running or queued up will get errors.

If thats the case you should remove (or rename) the app-info.xml file (you put it in the projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu folder, right), set "no new work" for the Einstein project and wait for all the workunits to crunch, upload and report. Then try installing the beta again.

Please reply with the version you have. From the work that just reported it looks like you're still on 4.79.

Hi Walt. Yes. I'm still in the old version. I'll check the things you suggested and get back to you.

Thank very much

I am runing he beta version

Message 13151 in response to message 13145

I am runing he beta version of Einstein. I ues a non-BOINC screeen saver. When I invoked the BOINC screen saver for SETI, it has the same problem. So not an einstein problem.

Hmmm, just a stab in the dark

Hmmm, just a stab in the dark here, but you may want to check whether your graphics drivers are up-to-date, and whether the display adaptor supports OpenGL graphics mode. Instructions to check and links to download sites are here.

(edit) just checked intel's website, and your Thinkpad's display adaptor, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, does support OpenGL. Still recommend checking for updated drivers. Go here to download them.

Regards,

Michael

I seem to remember reading that BOINC and/or Einstein has a compatibility problem with the Windows 3-D screensavers. However, I just looked around to see if I could find where I read that and came up empty. Hopefully, somebody else will remember this too, and post a link to it.
