QMC now has workunits that take far longer than even the longest monster units of S5R2. I saw one report of a 2090 credits super-monster. Apparently two teams ("SETI@USA" and "Planet3DNow") have chosen QMC as a battle ground for a race-like competition and kind of drained the project so that they had to generate new workunits that happen to be extra long.

Just got 1043 credits on a QMC WU done by my PII running Linux. A Windows Intel Core 2 run on the same WU had aborted with a client error. Just for the record, I am waiting the delivery of a SUN WS with an Opteron 1200 CPU and Solaris preinstalled. I shall try Solaris and if it does not accept BOINC programs I shall install Linux on .it.

Greetings from my new Opteron box. After a short attempt with Solaris, I loaded a live SuSE CD on it. Tomorrow I shall install SuSE 10.3 and start crunching.

I have posted "no new work" on all my three projects. SETI and Einstein are still running and I shall complete the WUS. Then I will pass all work to the new box, which seems a lot faster.
Congrats for the new box, should be a whole new feeling! I guess your Pentium II deserves some rest, it has been a reliable cruncher !

It has already been asked by my grandson Andrea, 6 years old. So it csn still be useful. I think I have brought it to its limits. An astronomer friend of mine has taught me that telescopes must be used to their limit ("diffraction limited"). Cheers.

Sorry, but no you haven't :).
To bring it to its limits you need to purchase (eg on ebay) a PIII Katmai 600MHz slot 1 processor, which should be very cheap these days. You can simply unplug the PII Deschutes and directly replace it with the PIII Katmai. You may need to reflash your BIOS and you will probably need to check motherboard switch settings because of the speed change from 400 to 600. Your motherboard manual will tell you all about that.
Your grandson will appreciate the considerable performance increase :).

Its an 800's WU, they are like 40% faster than the normal WUs.

So guess who is holding up the purging of these rogue units from the system ;) :).
Cheers,
Gary.
