About one million people are running SETI@home, although not all of them take part in message boards messaging. Why? Evidently they like it, and some spend a good deal of money building home made supercomputers with one, two, three and even four graphic boards just to gain completely useless credits. I've been on line from 1991 to 1995 on the Italian academic network GARR and the only fun was to visit the "topmodels" directory of the Gopher server at Pisa University. Evidently things have changed and I am running 5 BOINC projects, which keep me in contact with the science world and some friends (some enemies too but they can't hurt me). This guy's opinions seems outdated to me.

They were really outdated in 1995.. It just interesting to look back and see what some people's opinion of the web back in the old days :-).. I think I remember the CEO of IBM looking at some of the first PC's, stating I can see no market for these things. People including leaders sometimes live in a bubble.

As a student at Trieste University I was given the task of changing the electronics of a bubble chamber built for neutron detection from vacuum tubes to transistors. Some technician emptied a paper bag on my desk containing what seemed to be three-legged black insects, the first Germanium transistors. Since he knew I was majoring in theoretical physics he told me: see if you get something out of this stuff, which in my opinion has no future. The year was 1959.

An area I been noticing a lot of chatter lately is Energy Harvesting and Wireless Sensor Networks (ZigBee).
A neat company in new battery technology is Infinite Power Solutions ..
Only if you had a few million in venture capital.. you could have a lot of fun developing applications.. :-)
