Hi all. Can anyone help me with this error message?

12/23/2006 12:34:19 AM|Einstein@Home|Couldn't delete file projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/h1_1376.0_S5R1__417_S5R1a_1_0

Here's info on the computer (laptop), which is on Win2k:

I started getting the messages 12/08/2006 after an upload error to Einstein, right around the time the servers failed.

The file upload error was when Einstein's file servers went down. Maybe it caused an error in one/some of the files downloaded to BOINC and caused a bug. The first wu that was reported after the Unrecoverable error is below and this is the first instance of the 'Couldn't delete file..' error. Just a guess that the corrupt Einstein wu caused it.

I have posted the question on the Leiden and BOINC message boards, but it seems that the Einstein issues caused the error, and I haven't have a wu report correctly for Einstein since the issues (please see the BOINC thread for the details of the issue). WU's have report ok for the other projects, but they can't delete their file either.

Example of Einstein wu errors:
result 60912063, result 58604833, result 58397208, result 58312428, result 58195120, and result 57778391.

I am not only getting the error on Einstein uploads, but all projects I am running (UFluids, Leiden, Ralph, etc.). Thanks in advance for any and all help. Happy Holidays!

Couldn't delete file...

Could you try to exclude the BOINC directory with all its subdirectories from beeing scanned by your virus scanner?

There are incompatibilities between several scanners and several BOINC projects, usually happening when BOINC wants exclusive access to a file while the virus scanner is sniffing into the file.

Another possible reason would be a "hanging" crunching task that the BOINC client does not know anymore, so it isn't under BOINC control anymore.

When it happens again, check if there is such a task in Taskmanager. This is not necessarily an Einstein task, uFluids had some very bad behaved workunits lately, which ate up all memory so Windows needed nearly all its CPU time to handle swapping RAM from/to HD. You will not see the total required memory in Taskman without enabling the virtual memory column btw.

Especially if you have some energy saving options enabled on your laptop, the timing of the communication between the BOINC core and the BOINC API parts, which are part of the crunching programs, can get confused.

Thanks Ananas. I checked to

Thanks Ananas. I checked to see if there were any changes with my virus software that coincided with the time that the 'Couldn't delete file' issued started and I didn't find any, but this doesn't rule out Norton. I also checked Zone Alarm to see if it changed and was now blocking BIONC, but I couldn't find anything that changed with it either.

When the 'Couldn't delete file' error appears, BOINC is running fine, it just cannot delete the files it just uploaded to a project (it happens with each project, it cannot delete the files it has uploaded).

There hasn't been any of the 'environment is incorrect' errors, but I didn't have any Einstein wus to run. I just downloaded a Einstein wu, so we'll see if it runs ok.

There are no energy saving options enabled on this laptop.

Anything else to check?

Thanks again for the help and Happy New Year!

{Edit} I forgot to add that I upgraded to v5.4.11 but BOINC is still showing the 'Couldn't delete file' error after every time a project uploads data...

Unfortunately the results you

Unfortunately the results you named have already gone from the database.

First, take a look if the file h1_1323.5_S5R1__660_S5R1a_1_0 is actually there (in BOINC/projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/).

If it is, one thing I would check is the permissions of the BOINC directory and the project directories, and manually try to fix them if the user BOINC is running as is missing e.g. the permissions to create or delete a file.

You could also uninstall BOINC, then make sure to delete everything that's left in the BOINC directory (including all subdirectories) with the possible exception of the account*.xml files (so you don't have to attach again), and then do a fresh BOINC installation. This is the most drastic way, and you will lose all work that is currently in progress and have to download all datafiles again.

If the file is not there, you can either safely ignore the error, create a dummy file for BOINC to delete, or start to mess around with the client_state.xml (which I would definitely not recommend at all).

Thanks for the advice Bernd.

Thanks for the advice Bernd. I decided to try the drastic way since a reload/upgrade didn't fix it.

I changed all projects to 'Won't allow new tasks' and let the remaining wu finish, then uninstalled BOINC and deleted everything except the account*.xml files. Found out that I could not delete some of the files because of a sharing volation. Also found out that slots 0 and 1 could not be deleted and slot 1 had a mix of several projects (maybe some of the cause of the issues). Rebooted to safe mode, deleted the files I could not before, and did a disk scan then defrag'ed the disk. Finally, I reinstalled BIONC v5.4.11.

I changed all projects to 'Won't allow new tasked', but let them update. I then allowed a wu from Einstein and uFluids to download to give it a try, then changed them back to not allow new tasks. So far they've swapped back a forth ok, and the 1st of the two uFluids wu finished, but BOINC still couldn't delete the file. I looked in the project directory and file the file in question and tried to delete it myself, but I got a error popup "Error Deleting File or Folder" 'Cannot delete axi_tube5_85_0_1200_0.07_0: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use.' I'm going to let the remaining uFluids wu and the Einstein wu finish and see what happens and let you know.

Can you direct me in how to check the permissions of the file/folder please and how to change it back to allow BOINC to run smoothly again?

Thanks in advance for the help and have a great week!

Well, the second uF wu

Well, the second uF wu finished and BOINC switched to the Einstein wu, then it failed upon the restart. So it looks like I'm still having major issues. BTW, here's the log with the errors:

Hi all. I forgot to add the

Hi all. I forgot to add the result/wu.

I have not been able to complete a wu without it having a compute error since the initial server crashes in early December. Maybe this is a coincidence, but it doesn't seem like it. That is also when I started getting the 'Couldn't delete file...' errors as well. I had an Einstein wu crash BOINC when the servers failed, since then BOINC has had problems. A reload, upgrade, and complete delete, disk scan, defrag, and reload have failed to fix the issues.

Have been basically limping along since beginning of Dec now. Please help.

Thanks again!!!!

I'm kind of clueless. Are you sharing the drive BOINC is installed in, or any directories ("Program Files") on the network?

Hi Bernd. Nope, 'Do not share

Hi Bernd. Nope, 'Do not share this folder' is selected on each of the folders. I can't find the permissions of the files (I think this is because I have Win2k and it's FAT32 instead of NTFS). This is on a laptop, which I take with me each day, so the only time it's connected is to my cable modem.

Thanks again for the help.
