Decided to take the DL-380 offline for the summer. With 4 A/Cs running in the house, the power bill is going to get expensive. I may pull the NVIDIA card out of the server and put it into the Z420 which is still running. The card will run more efficiently in that box and I have two threads free for GPU use. If this works, I will use the server for CPU only tasks, when I start it up again in the fall.

I believe that many of us are

I believe that many of us are forced to take units offline during the "hot" season.  I know I took a large tower offline about one month ago.  It definitely helps.  Looking forward to October when things cool down and I can bring that tower back online.

I did it differently I took my gpu's off line but brought more cpu cores online and cut my electric bill by over $100US, my wife is happy and my ac units run less. I do still run a few gpu's when my RAC gets too low for me but so far only for 24 hours then I set No New Tasks and they sit idle again. As it  gets hotter that will probably only be overnight when it's somewhat cooler. Come Fall I will reduce the cpu cores again and add in the gpu's instead. I have several pc's I replaced but kept the old ones in case I needed them, they came in handy after all.

I may pull the GPU out of the

I may pull the GPU out of the server and install it in the workstation. I suspect it will run more efficiently in that box. For some reason, the server seems to draw much more power, even at idle, with that GPU installed. I have two additional threads to support the GPU, in the work station. This move will turn that box into a GPU only platform. The server, when I bring it back online, will have eight threads for crunching CPU tasks. I still have my DL-360 with 16 threads, but that thing is a power hog!

I have several older HP and Dell boxes with dual quad core Xeon cpu's in them and they are power hogs too but they have 16 HT cpu cores in each one and they just bang out workunits!!!

I am getting hit with

I am getting hit with "heatwave" warnings so I have my systems suspend during those periods of the daytime.  Then my A/C can keep up.

Things like "heat index" up to 112F.

And my power bill still needs to come down.....

Mine isn't that high and I hope it doesn't get there either!!!

Most of my pc's are in a room in the garage that has it's own mini-split a/c system cooling it so it doesn't affect the house temps at all. I need to work on better  airflow during the cooler nights and lower daytime temp days though so the a/c system can shut off when the outside temps are below the temp I have it set at, I now have all Summer to work on that. Being  in the garage though is posing a problem as the cool air has to come from someplace and just cutting a hole means the hurricane winds can come in when they come back again. I already have a 20 amp circuit in the attic for an exhaust fan to suck the air out of  the computer room but getting the fresh air in is causing problems. I live in a neighborhood with an HOA so don't  have full control over everything I could do.

what made a significant

what made a significant difference for me was last year I had blown in attic insulation put in my attic.  I had noticed that after 40 some years the rolled stuff had compressed and was apparently not as effective.  I don't recall the cost of blown in but it was reasonable and a relatively quick install.

I have both GPU's running in

I have both GPU's running in the same box now. This box now does GPU only. The server is back up, running CPU tasks. Overall, this configuration is considerably more efficient than the previous setup. The server fans do not go into launch mode either. The older 1U GPU was using more than twice the power than it is now.

My new house has that but in a few years I will pay to have more put up there. I also have  those reflective sheets up near the shingles on the inside of the plywood to reflect the heat back out before it makes the attic too hot.

I have wwaaaay too many gpu's for that, I have over half a dozen on the shelf and still have one in every pc, now some of  the pc's I have running now won't be running in the Fall as I phase back in the gpu crunching and the best gpu's I have will be in the machines. Right now some of the gpu's are just place holders so all the vendors drivers are loaded.
