PLEASE, make 0.18 Official, keep efficient 4.79 as anonymous

Having been until now a determined (and vociferous) opponent to the 0.18 beta Einstein app going official, I would respectfully like to reverse my stance, with the proviso that after a week or so has elapsed, and having converted nearly all hosts to 0.18 or whatever it would be officially named, that v4.79 be re-released as as anonymous option for those who have encountered no graphics bug and are averse to enduring the "0.18 slowdown" penalty that besets most platforms. This idea is mostly courtesy of Stick, here, with fine-tuning added.

I do not have a problem with your request but I am curious about why you suggest a week's delay before releasing 4.79 as an anonymous option.

Mark,

I don't know whether the server(s) would be overloaded, uploading the new app to everyone, and how long that would take to "Phase in". I haven't undergone a forced app change here (that I know of), so I'm just guessing at how long that would require. Personally, I'd be fine with the anonymous app being released even before the changeover, but I wouldn't like for anything to delay implementation of the fixes to the 4.79-legacy graphics problems, for the benefit of new participants, and those "silent ones" whose hosts go on spitting out invalid results (with 0xc0000005 exitcode) with no intervention.

(edit) - I don't know why the title of this thread was altered. It originally read "PLEASE, make 0.18 Official, ... but", and I have not changed my opposition to having 0.18 shoved down everyone's throat (mine in particular) permanently. I feel very strongly both sides of the 0.18 dilemma/argument, and the only way I can see that it gets resolved without further delay and without crippling those hosts immune to the bug is the official .18 released side-by-side with "4.79anon".

Mark,

No problem. Thanks for having the interest.

(edit) - Don't worry, Mark, I'm not caving in to the Dark Side. :-) My approval for going ahead with 0.18 is entirely conditional, predicated upon somehow retaining the efficient-crunching 4.79 until a refinement comes along that embodies both the fixes and the efficiency.

I do (know that is :), and NOT anything else you might construe it to mean :).

I reckon you would have had quotes around the word "Official" like I've just done.

I reported this bug about a month ago here and there has been no response so I guess the BOINC Devs are a bit hard pressed at the moment. I was actually quite proud of that bug report too :).

Cheers,
Gary.

Gary,

Thanks for the explanation. I may indeed have put it in quotes, can't remember. I don't think I misconstrued anything, as I took no offence - I was just disappointed because it kind of watered down the intent of the thread. Anything you can do to restore it?

Michael

Bug - Computational Error

Bug - Computational Error with Exit code 0xc000000005. Can anyone tell me if this frequently occuring message is also linked to the screen saver? Does it also mean that 6-8 hours of processing is effectively trashed or does it provide some useful data?
I've been trying this system for only two days.

Thank you for helping to make our point !!!

Your Error Message definitely indicates you have the "graphics bug". And, yes your processing time has gone for naught. As you have probably read somewhere already, you have two choices: 1. stop using the screensaver (or "Show graphics" option); or, 2. change to the Beta application (v0.18). The link to the Beta is under More Information on the EAH home page.
