I can feel a "Now, now, Michael moment coming on ...." :).
So, just be patient and allow them to get it right before they release it. I'm very sure that the hard work you, Stick, Walt, Bill and others are putting in to help people with graphics problems hasn't been ignored.

Aw, Gary,

I came into myself, came of age in the late '60s-early '70s, legalize pot, stop the war, end discrimination. I'd feel naked without my "Crusader suit" on.

RE: Do they plan to take

Do they plan to take the new application directly to "official" status and skip the Beta stage?

I have no idea how the new app will be introduced but I'm willing to speculate :). I would imagine they have a bunch of machines "in-house" churning through work with the new app right now, with all the technical people (ie all of them) poring over the results and making sure everything is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Not only do they have to get the science right, but also they must make the whole thing interface very smoothly with BOINC. After all they have a pretty good reputation for professionalism and project reliability to maintain :). Because all of them are very involved, I don't imagine they have much time to debate issues on the message boards. Nor should they because we all want the best possible science app in the shortest possible time.

When they feel that all is ready, they will use the BOINC mechanism to upgrade the science app as the participants request new large data files. There would be a period where both new and old science apps were working on different data sets. The participants could remain totally oblivious to the changeover as BOINC (both client and server) would do all the decision making. If you were around at the initial startup when they first opened the gates and let us all in, the results actually had the word "test" as part of the filename. There were a number of questions by observant participants concerned that they weren't doing "real" work. I can still remember a succinct statement from Bruce at one point which simply said, "The test worked - so it's real work", or something along those lines :). I imagine they might do something similar again this time.

One complicating factor, is the people on the beta app using the anonymous platform mechanism (app_info.xml). I'm not sure of the best way to handle this. Possibly just a message to all concerned to delete the file or possibly a request to replace it with a new file containing the code to set the new app rather than 0.18. Maybe they can do something on the server to send a message to all boxes using the beta app, with that message displaying in the messages tab of BOINC Manager. The difficulty is how to get everyone's attention. Invalid results might be the final mechanism to alert anyone not paying attention. I really dont understand enough about this to offer a meaningful guess.

But it certainly does not explain why the idea has been ignored. We are just trying to help out here and are making reasonable suggestions to fix one of everyday problems Einstein users are facing. I think we deserve a better response.

Stick, I'm sure your concerns haven't been ignored and I'm sure there are good reasons for not starting a debate on these things on the message boards. I'm sure they are really snowed under at the moment and will reveal all as soon as they have it all nailed down and rock solid. Because you have done such a good job of helping people with graphics problems, I'm sure they really appreciate your efforts. When the pressure is on to get something out the door, there simply isn't time to handle all the things that could be handled if the environment were a bit more sane.

I think we must be getting close to release time. I'm sure you've noticed the sticky by Bruce regarding the availability of server logs to diagnose problems. Ask youself why that has just happened now? I imagine it might be very useful to diagnose any problems that suddenly appear when the new app goes into production. In the early days after the public launch of this project, I saw several examples of Bruce commenting on what he could see at the server end when users were reporting issues at their end. This is probably going to happen again with many more people now able to help with the diagnosis.

I know this isn't a very satisfying response from your point of view. All I can say, unofficially as a participant just like yourself, is that I value your contributions, through hundreds of posts, very highly.

Cheers,
Gary.

Well, certainly don't take it off on my account :). I don't think I could stand the shock :).

You just keep on doing exactly what you have been doing. The more I read of what you write, the more I realise that there would be a large hole here if you ever decide to move elsewhere. Same as Stick, hundreds of helpful posts which have been much appreciated by all concerned.

Talking about helpful posts, there must be about 10 Bill Michaels around judging by the prolific output on quite a number of boards. He's been really working hard on the BOINC boards. For a Mac guy claiming to not know much about windoze, he's been giving some very good windoze advice. He is a great asset to any BOINC project board and I'm really glad he frequently posts here.

Cheers,
Gary.

Gary, Thank you (again)

Message 19811 in response to message 19809

Gary,

Thank you (again) for your response. I feel like you have taken on the responsibility of defending and apologizing for the "powers that be". And, although you are doing a very good job of it, it "ain't the same thing".

I hope that I am not coming across as a "spoiled brat" who just wants to have his way. Nothing could be further from the truth. My objectives have only been: 1/ to help out; and 2/ to find out what's going on.

Yes, Michael and I debated the Beta app subject early on, but only a few others joined in. And, after a while, we all realized we were on the same side. It was all over pretty quickly and the result was this suggestion thread. The suggestion is a positive one and the discussion has mainly just raised some valid questions. Unfortunately, the only response we have gotten is Bruce's somewhat cryptic comments on the Beta app thread - which, IMO, do not qualify as informative.

I am still a loyal supporter of EAH and I intend to continue donating time (both CPU and personal) to the project. I am intriqued by the science. But I am disappointed by the scientists. Their project management techniques, it would appear, were learned from reading George Orwell.

Stick,

I understand your position and agree with your objectives.

I'm very glad you are not leaving.

I'm not really meaning to apologise so I'll try to stop sounding apologetic :).

Hopefully, everyone's frustration will be relatively shortlived.

Cheers,
Gary.
