Anything you can do to restore it?

You can do it yourself. Just make a new post in this thread. Reply to me saying, "Thanks for the tip" if you like :).

Then the trick. Before the expiry time (1 hour) you must edit your post by clicking the edit button. You don't actually need to edit your post - you just need to be in the editing screen because, once there, you will find the thread title available for editing. Do so to your heart's content :).

Cheers,
Gary.

I would like to see 0.18 made

Message 19789 in response to message 19781

I would like to see 0.18 made the official app regardless. In my opinion the reduction in errors would more than make up for slightly longer crunch times.

John,

Thank you for weighing in here, your help is much appreciated.

BTW, I checked your computers and noticed that you are still running 4.79, not 0.18, on all of them. This leads me to conclude that you would crunch with 4.79 by your own personal preference, same as me. Your Celeron box is badly in need of the 0.18, though - majority of WUs errored-out with 0cx0000005 exitcodes. Have you noticed this?

Respects,

Michael

(edit) Let's do what we can to keep this 0.18 on the front burner, though. As I mentioned in my other Wish List thread, I co-crunched several WUs with another host that had been with Einstein since early August, had pages full (without exception) of 0xc0000005 exitcoded invalid WUs, and a total of 0 credits for 3 months work. Now I'll admit the possibility of someone running Einstein solely to display the sphere screensaver 24/7, but I think it's more likely a case of an unaware person whose host continually gobbles up WUs, spits out garbage, and in many cases delays formation of the quorum, all of which is a waste, curable by conversion to 0.18. The rapid influx of new-to-boinc SetiClassic people is already upon us, and we are still woefully unprepared to smoothly assimilate them.

Right on! I think I responded to five new screensaver/client error type reports today alone.

I've noticed, and naturally it is one that I can not put the beta on, I was doing good to get BOINC installed on my nephew's computer, and my nephew loves the screensaver.

I'm all for getting the beta

I'm all for getting the beta app into full production. I'd like to use the screen saver (I'm getting tired of the picture slide show I have on it now) but I don't want the error. In fact, I think my first or second wu errored out because of the infamous graphics bug.

However, given that it takes me 13 or so hours to crunch a single wu, I'd also like to see the "efficiency" problem addressed too.

Just my 20 Won (no pennies here in Korea).

Hello

This may sound a bit daft - but what are the reasons for the bug - is it due to screensaver/graphic issues (such as with ATI cards) or what - sorry I have been trying to pay the rent for a while and lost touch.

For myself, to the best of my knowledge I have had no errors and I'm using 4.79 on BOINC series 5.xx for quite some time now. I have noticed a slight slowdown in cruching time since I upgraded BOINC in the last 2 versions.

Gray,

If you don't use Einstein graphics, then v4.79 is fine - but the problem is a lot of new users want to use the screensaver; and, of course, they immediately encounter problems. The graphics bug goes a little deeper than just ATI graphics card incompatibility. Einstein 4.79 was built using the BOINC library that was in effect when BOINC 4.19 was out. That library was changed when v4.45 was released and more graphics related problems started cropping up as a result. For example, my Dell laptop has an Intel chipset display adapter and I got the bug as soon as I upgraded to BOINC 4.45. The Beta app not only fixes the ATI problem but also uses the new BOINC library.

Stick

Ah thanks for that Stick - tho' I must admit that I use the screensaver at times and have had no problems, also just tried the show graphics option - no problems - hence my query. In fact once I got my prefereneces set up correctly on the server I have been hassle free. Now if I could just get some water cooling here to get rid of the fan noise (OK fan "rustle") I'd be happy - PC is metres away from the bed...
