Ah thanks for that Stick - tho' I must admit that I use the screensaver at times and have had no problems, also just tried the show graphics option - no problems - hence my query.

Gray,

I suggest you take a look at your results. You may want to re-evaluate the above statement.

Hello Stick

Yup I saw the errors - they were because I was aborting WUs - fiddling again or as Michael calls it: "micromanaging" (grins). Actually I was trying Rosetta to see if they had got the graphics working yet (which they have but not as easy on the eye as Einstein - just for the record - tho' it IS still in Beta). Either way those errors were as a result of me fiddling... I stick by my statement

Gray

"edit" also the lack of errors I was referring earlier to would have been of the I can't see graphics variety - but Einstein has always worked there for me - it's why I am still with it.

I realized they were not the standard 0x50 "graphics bug" errors but I am also pretty sure I have seen "-197" errors mixed in with 0x50 errors on hosts that do have the graphics bug. Hence, my earlier reply.

Here I must bow to greater experience !
But yup been a happy Einstein cruncher for a while now - no real issues apart from that one out of date server page which wouldn't allow me to create a passowrd - but that was solved very quickly by the site admin chaps and chapettes some time back.

Dear Stick, Many thanks

Message 19802 in response to message 19787

Dear Stick,

Many thanks for your help over the Screensaver bug. I disabled the screensaver and have now successfully completed two tranches of work. I've even got Credits now!
However, I find it incredulous that I am able to download the BOINC software with NO warning about the bug and therefore need to trawl the Message boards for advice. I would have thought that a warning or a 'Readme.txt' would be very useful.
Thanks again. Stewart.

Bug - Computational Error with Exit code 0xc000000005. Can anyone tell me if this frequently occuring message is also linked to the screen saver? Does it also mean that 6-8 hours of processing is effectively trashed or does it provide some useful data?
I've been trying this system for only two days.

Thank you for helping to make our point !!!

Your Error Message definitely indicates you have the "graphics bug". And, yes your processing time has gone for naught. As you have probably read somewhere already, you have two choices: 1. stop using the screensaver (or "Show graphics" option); or, 2. change to the Beta application (v0.18). The link to the Beta is under More Information on the EAH home page.

Stewart,

I am glad to hear you have things working now. And thanks again for your post. Hopefully, it will help gain attention for our suggestion. Considering your comment regarding "NO worning", you might also think about adding something to Tony's Wish List post here.

Gary, I just read your

Gary,

I just read your post and you've got me thinking. Didn't anyone ever tell you not to do that? LOL Now I'm wondering if I can get that app_info.xml file and drop it into my einstein folder, possibly with some editing, and continue to run 4.79, in the event that they do a hard update to 0.18 or it's derivative without keeping 4.79 available as an anonymous app option, as Stick and I have campaigning for them to do.

"This replacement will happen automatically for those users running the standard science app, version 4.79. It will not happen automatically for those running the beta app, version 0.18. You will need to keep track of things and when the time comes you will have to delete a file called app_info.xml which is installed along with the beta app. You will know when that file is installed as BOINC will report in its messages, "Using anonymous platform". This essentially means that BOINC will ignore the normal rules for checking and updating the standard science app and will continue to use the special app that is named in the app_info.xml file."

Hard as Stick and I have tried to lobby them to crank out 0.18 without further delay, even to the extent that Stick asked Dr. Allen to have a look at this thread, consider it, and comment on it, to no avail. Dr. Allen went so far as to reply to the post following Stick's, but ignored his. Seems like our cries have fallen upon deaf ears. We're feeling prety discouraged and snubbed, as if we're being told to "Just go away and shut up".

Yes, it should be entirely possible to do that and I believe that BOINC could be instructed to ignore newer apps and continue using whatever was specified in the file. However you really wouldn't want to do that because the results from your old version wouldn't validate with the results from the new version and would therefore be rejected. At the moment 0.18 and 4.79 do exactly the same science but that is not going to hold true in the future.

I can feel a "Now, now, Michael moment coming on ...." :).

Bruce actually did make a statement about the reasons for the delay in the discussion thread for the beta app here. Go and read it again and put it in the context of other posts about the availability of the more sensitive S4 data and you can appreciate that they are probably working very hard to get everything right before they parade their shiny new car in front of the masses :). You can imagine that they wouldn't want the engine blowing up on its maiden run now would they? :).

So, just be patient and allow them to get it right before they release it. I'm very sure that the hard work you, Stick, Walt, Bill and others are putting in to help people with graphics problems hasn't been ignored.

Cheers,
Gary.

For anyone wanting to know

For anyone wanting to know more about the "Anonymous Platform" mechanism and what it is designed to do, this is the appropriate link to look at in the Wiki.

Gary,

I had assumed that the new and old science calculations would be incompatible and therefore "making the changeover" will be a difficult issue to manage. I also read the part of Dr. Allen's post which said that they were having problems with the new validator. This made me wonder: Do they plan to take the new application directly to "official" status and skip the Beta stage? That might explain why they haven't picked up on the idea originally posted here.

But it certainly does not explain why the idea has been ignored. We are just trying to help out here and are making reasonable suggestions to fix one of everyday problems Einstein users are facing. I think we deserve a better response.
