After restart, boinc shows

After restart, boinc shows all 4 cores at 100%. Just now started manager. still running. The boinc manager display is visible, but no updated to % or cpu time are shown. gkrellm doesn't seem to be updating either. I was able to log out and restart using the mouse. Well, I thought I was, ended up resetting the computer. My guess is Linux couldn't close boinc and was hung up.

upped CPU V to 1.3375

FSB freq - 204
PCIE freq - 100
Processor freq mult - 13.5X
cpu-nb link speed - auto
cpu volt - 1.3375
cpu-nb volt - auto
dram volt - 2.10
Mem freq 533/1066
2T, 5,5,5,15

nope got to the linux display and locked up before I could do anything.

At 1.35V cpu, it booted and

At 1.35V cpu, it booted and was able to interface with display. Also, Boinc Shows All 4 cores at 100%. THe manager shows progress and is counting. I'm going to hang out here (2.754 Ghz) and see if it'll finish a wu. The processors up to 50C, but those stinking caps are also getting hotter. The SB is up to 57 C

The screen has stopped

The screen has stopped responding to mouse commands, but two of the 4 running wus are still showing progression, the other two are not. Gkrellm has also ceased responding and boinc is now locked up

Not sure what to try at this

Not sure what to try at this point, SOOO

I tried upping the V, lowering the FSB to 200 and trying 14X to get 2.8 Ghz

FSB freq - 200
PCIE freq - 100
Processor freq mult - 14X
cpu-nb link speed - auto
cpu volt - 1.375
cpu-nb volt - auto
dram volt - 2.10
Mem freq 533/1066
2T, 5,5,5,15

And it's trying to boot into linux....

OK, 3 attempts to load linux

OK, 3 attempts to load linux failed.

rebooted and scaled it back to 2.7 Ghz:

FSB freq - 200
PCIE freq - 100
Processor freq mult - 13.5X
cpu-nb link speed - auto
cpu volt - 1.3375
cpu-nb volt - auto
dram volt - 2.15
Mem freq 533/1066
2T, 4,4,4,12

At this point, I'm done until someone else can direct the direction of this effort.

tony

[edit] just lost cpu0(turned to orange color from green but still at 100%) and cpu 3 is at 0%. Gkrellm is still polling. Boinc manager shows NO progress.

OK, The Q6600 has turned in

OK, The Q6600 has turned in it's first wus now. At stock settings it finished all 4 Simap wus between 40:08 and 40:21. The first stock 9600 wus came in at 45 min, so the Q6600 is about 12% faster when compared stock to stock or 2.3 Ghz to 2.4 Ghz.

Compared at the same freq, the 9600 was 44 min to the Q6600's 40 min, or 10% faster.

The 9600 at 2.6 Ghz is roughly the same as the Q6600 at 2.4 Ghz.

The highest temp I can find with my Fluke 65 IR temp probe is 56C on the stock Q6600, but only 46 on the 9600 (at 2.639).

Both underperform my AMD64 X2 5200 and 6000 on a core to core comparison using Simap run times as the measure, and so, I'm similarly unimpressed with the Q6600 as well. Perhaps when I can OC the Q6600 I'll feel better about it's performance. From all the hype, I was expecting more from both processors.

Both systems are using EXACTLY the same size, capacity, model number of:
2G Corsair XMS2 DDR2 1066 RAM (2x1) in dual channel config.
Enermax 80+ Eff, 620 watt PSU
Hitachi 80 Gig, Sata II hard drive
Mandriva 64b linux
factory official Boinc 5.10.28 64 bit.

The Q6600 has:
Asus P5K-VM mobo
Artic cooling 7 freezer pro heatsink/fan
Q6600 processor

The 9600 Black has
Asus M3A mobo
Artic cooling 64 freezer pro heatsink/fan
Radeon HD 3450 PCI X16 2.0 graphics card (256) (cheap one)
AMD 9600 black processor.

@ Bikeman, the command you

@ Bikeman, the command you gave:

cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/temperature

Doesn't work on the Q6600 either, just for your info.

Boinc Simap is down to 105K wus, so you should see these machines here about 4 days after they run out (probably in the next 2 days), so about a week from now is my guess.
