HI.

Well, I got my Phenom black. Took all of 15 min to format and install Mandriva Spring 2007 KDE.....

However, it doesn't see the Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter on the Asus M3A mobo. I have opened the Asus driver CD and found:

LinuxDrivers folder, then Lan, then Linux-v1.2.40.0, then l1-linux-v1.2.40.0, It contains a src folder, a atl1.7 license file, an atl1.spec file, a copying file, a ldistrib.txt file and release_note.txt file.
the src folder contains:

at_ethtoolc file, at.h file, at_hw.c file, at_hw.h file, at_main.c file, at_osdep.h file, at_param.c file, kcompat.c file, kcompat_ethtool.c file, kcompat.h file, Makefile, and an empty document named Module.symvers

Any Idea How I can make Mandriva see my ethernet adapter?????

AMD 9600 Black OC effort

I've read and am currently rereading the "readme". It shows "how to build a binary RPM* package, but I don't think Mandriva uses RPM's.

It also has "configuring the Driver on Different Distrobutions" which says:

Configuring a network driver to load properly when the system is started is distribution dependent. Typically, the configuration process involves adding an alias line to the /etc/modules.comf as well as editing other system startup. scripts and/or configuration files. Many popular Linus distributions ship with tools to make these changes for you. To learn the proper way to configure a network device for your system, refer to your distribution documentation. If during this process you are asked for the driver or module name, the name for the Linux base driver for the Atheros L1 is atl1
..
As an example, if you install the atl1 driver for two L1 adapters (eth0 and eth1) and set the speed and duples to 10full and 100half, add the following to modules.conf:

and it goes on from there.

Like I keep saying, I don't

Like I keep saying, I don't know why people think Linux is "all that and a bag of chips"....but I digress...

You might want to send a PM to Martin (ML1). Since he runs Mandriva, perhaps he could help...

Alternatively, Google it... ;-)

He's the one that talked me into using Mandriva.

the file also says to go to http://support.atheros.com/, but I can't seem to get a connection to that site. does the link work for anyone else?

I get a page saying:
Please use the secure web page, and then log in.

I pasted the link in the message.

Working with IE7 on Windows XP:

The link works, but brings up a page with a few logos and "Please use the secure web page, and then log in."

The link takes you to https://[the same address], which comes up (after a delay) with "The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority.
The security certificate presented by this website has expired or is not yet valid." and a warning not to continue.

The next page, after another loading delay, offers "Welcome to Support at Atheros!

and the logos again.

I looked around the general www.atheros.com site, and found:

Quote:
If you are not a direct Atheros customer and require driver support or customer service related to drivers, please contact the manufacturer of the product or system you purchased. We suggest you refer to the manufacturer’s website, as they typically
offer online technical support pages where software drivers, updates and related information can be obtained. We thank you for purchasing an Atheros-enabled product.

and no support links. Looks a dead end, unfortunately.

Hi! Do I understand this

Hi!

Do I understand this correctly, Linux doesn't even see the eternet adapter, that is ifconfig just displays the loopback device, nothing else? Or is the adapter displayed but not operational?

Anything in the boot-up logs that might help? dmesg ?

The message was similar to

The message was similar to "we found NO adapter". Not that it saw it but It didn't work properly...etc

I currently am downloading boatloads of work atm. It would be nice to learn how to deal with this as I'm plumb out of extra network cards for when my Q6600 gets here. However, my mind is relieved I can test out the cpu/mobo BEFORE the return date arrives. LOL

Googled it on Tony's behalf

Googled it on Tony's behalf while he's busy.

Best bet seems to be http://atl1.sourceforge.net/

Highlights:

1) Don't use a vendor version older than 1.2.40.2

2) There is a bug in the atl1 driver that results in a kernel hang or crash (oops) under heavy network load IF AND ONLY IF you have 4GB or more RAM in your system. This happens because of an L1 hardware design issue that is exposed by the atl1 driver. If you encounter this problem, modify your kernel's boot line and add this kernel parameter: mem=3900M. A fix has been added to the 2.6.23 kernel.

Well, I got GKrellm

Well, I got GKrellm configured and see 100%, 100%, 100%, and 99%....it's the first time I've ever seen that many on one of my puters before....lol

It's almost bedtime, so I'll let her go till tomorrow. that's when the real playing begins.

thanks
all.
tony

PS, anyone know of a KDE temp program I can configure?? It's currently open on my desk. The heatsink hardly has any sign of heat at all (just over room temp). My Fluke 65 IR thermometer shows 47.5C as the highest temp I can find on the cpu/heatsink base area. the Radeon HD3450 Sapphire PCI 2.0 X16 vid card is at 55+C though.
