Got my first S5 on a AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+ running Linux (FC3) and it's got a completion time of 28 hours and change.

That's nothing when compared to the WU's from CPDN.

But I am getting times of 11 hours on a 400 MHz Pentium II running SuSE Linux!
How can it be?

There are two types of workunits: short and long.
Perhaps this is why.

Is there a way to determine if it's a "short or long"? Maybe something in the name? I'd guess this is a "long", as the same machine did S4 in the expected times.

Also, after about 1:40 of crunching, it's at 18.60% complete, so the time estimate might be way off...

To determine short or long in my understanding its whether the frequency is xxxx.x for long and xxx.x for short

And where might this be found?

BTW, at 2 hours of CPU time, it's over 20% done

Bruce Allen posted: The short workunits have XXXX.X less than or equal to 0400.0. Click the link, read the thread, it may answer some more of your future questions.

In a posting from a project manager...but YOU would need to find it for your confirmation as I don't have the time to find it ....sorry

Oh and if you have run S4 it seems to hold true all my shorts were 3 digit frequencies

These are a bit long My first

These are a bit long
My first S5 unit has so far got 70% done in over 8hours. Its going to take over 11 hours easy.

Thats a lot longer than they said they would be. Old S4 units only took 45min at most. So thats almost 15x longer

My machine's a Pentium D 830 OC'd to 3.2ghz

I think maybe the project runners forget or ignore the fact that some of us run multiple projects and units that long are really pushing it. I'm a lucky one who has his machine almost 24/7 but anyone who only runs for a few hours a day would have trouble just doing this projects units. Try then coupling with the now quote long seti units and anyother project they might be using and there almost no way they're going to have great difficulty getting all the work done.
Lastly its a bit annoying to have to butt in on boinc to make it act fairly towards each individual project now. I know it should already be but with the increased times and a modest small cache (good job it set to small 1.5days) einstien has filled that cache and i have no seti and wont do until these S5 units finish in a couple of days.

Also maybe they forget that probly more than half the computers doing work for them are, shall we say older and usually run in 'farms' by those few prelific crunchers. Some of them probly only added because the optimized apps meant they now can achieve the deadlines. and when you increase the unit lengths by a large amount some of those machines have to be taken off the project because they can no longer make the deadlines. Maybe 'Short' and 'Long' is not enough. Maybe you'd do better to have the 'Short''Long' and 'as short as S4' which is only meant for those that can't reach the deadlines. I'd heared you'd done quoite a bit toward getting the system to send machine only whats suitable for them.

Sorry to complain. I see the need to increase the length of the units but i do think you and the leaders of other projects take the optimizations as a great opportunity to over increase the length of units.

They really take a lot of time, even on my Pentium D 930 Overclocked @ 4.2GHz is taken 8.52 Hours to complete a WU. I have no problem on the eletricy cost and my PC is running E@H 24/7... I'm still waiting Akos speedup this times.

Now this is ridiculus. My statement before about how older machines just WILL NOT be ale to cope, Well just checked my other machine (Pentium 4 3.4ghz HT- NOT AT ALL OLD) and the one unit I let it download a few days ago is, at current speed, going to take over 20hours. Thats almost my entire work chache in one WU! Thats just selfish Einstien. If that doesn't seriously improve I'll have to minimum remove that computer from this project and then it'll be able to do work for other/multiple projects again.
I've had to increase my work cache just so that computer can be allowed to download other work than just that 1 einstien unit.

Consider even if I half that time to example a short unit so thats 10hours- but on and P4 3.4. How would anything less than pentium 3 or equivalent and a passive (few hours a day) cruncher ever cope?

Hm, are Pentium 4's always so

Hm, are Pentium 4's always so bad at Einstein or is yours only totaly messed up? The long WUs take 9:00 - 9:15 hours here with an Athlon 64 3500+ (2200 mhz).
(or do you have HT enabled so it crunches 2 WUs at a time? then think about disabling HT)

As other's have indicated, I would suggest your computer needs sorting out. This unit resultid=34188053 has been processed by a P3 @ 924 MHz in under 24hrs.
