Perhaps you misunderstand... I don't have a thing against BOINC. After all, I'm here and enjoying myself. My beef is with the way the folks a Berkeley treated those of us at SETI Classic over the last two years. Sure, we knew the project was going to draw to a close. It was going to close from the day it started. What it boiled down to was that the Berkeley folks ignored the people at Classic, failed to keep us informed and refused to do anything about the remarkably rude treatment of SETI Classic users on the SETI BOINC message boards. After six plus years of effort on the part of the volunteers one might expect better treatment.
I'm here at Einstein because 1)the science intrigued me 2)because the message boards seemed rather free of the animosity that drove me away from SETI.
End of story.
It's easier to beg for forgiveness that it is to ask for permission...
Seti is shutting down in May of 2005, That was posted on the Classic Site
As soon as I saw the Boinc link ...I moved to Boinc
They gave Classic users 7 months extra....To change over to Boinc...That was nice of them
You stayed at Classic , even though you knew it was on borrowed time...Not UCB's fault...It's Yours
If a Store was closing down , and it was posted on the door, And the doors stayed unlocked Past that date(say 7 months) , and there was no merchandise on the shelves(Credits for a dead project, No new WU's), why would you spend your time there..... waiting for another Closed sign (update)?
How do you update "We are shutting this project(Classic) down, move to Boinc"
I guess like this
March 17, 2005
In preparation for shutting down SETI@home Classic (in about 1 month, hopefully) we're trying to make sure that SETI@home Classic accounts are linked to the proper SETI@home/BOINC account. This is a bit complicated because of email address changes. See our current transition plan.
March 23, 2005
SETI@home Classic participants: you can now activate your SETI@home/BOINC account (with your Classic work totals) even if the email address of your Classic account is no longer valid.
September 6, 2005
SETI@home Classic will process its two billionth workunit today. Congratulations to everyone for this achievement.
November 14, 2005
Tomorrow we will start merging the SETI@home classic science database with SETI@home/BOINC. This will take several days, during which some back-end servers will be offline (splitters and assimilators). We stored up a large queue of work - we are hoping this will keep all BOINC clients occupied during the outage.
November 15, 2005
The old SETI@home Classic project will stop issuing work on December 15, 2005. Anyone still running SETI@home Classic should deactivate it and install SETI@home/BOINC
December 15, 2005
After 6 years of operation, SETI@home Classic sent out its last workunit. We will clean up and synchronize the Classic stats with the current SETI@home project in the coming weeks. Thanks to all SETI@home Classic participants for their tremendous dedication to the project. You made SETI@home into something of lasting significance.
December 23, 2005
Yesterday we stopped accepting results for SETI@home Classic. The Classic project stats are now frozen.

Fair enough... now please compare the number of messages that the Berkeley gods posted on the SETI clone board to the messages they posted on the Classic board during the same time frame...
SETI BOINC got virtually all the attention... Classic, despite the fact that we were producing a tremendous amount of valid work and results, was ignored...
So many SETI BOINCsters were hostile to Classic users that a HUGE amount of processing power was lost to SETI@home... There are many Classic users, including me, that will never return to that project...
Like my momma usta say... fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, shame on me....

How long do you guys (Seti-Boinc AND Seti-Classic) plan to continue feuding over this?
Seti-Classic: Is it really necessary to hop from one project to another and spilling your bile, ranting and raving over how 'unfairly' you were treated? Classic is over and done with. You knew it was coming (or would have if you cared enough to follow your home page notices). Cry your tears and move on. Since you're on this board, you've obviously installed BOINC and are using it. Rejoice in the fact that Classic has evolved and spawned this amazing NEW experiment: BOINC.
Seti-Boinc: Is it really necessary to hop from one project to another, chasing the Classic users just so you can bait them one more time? If the Classic users are on Seti-Boinc, it means they've accepted the inevitable and made the switch. Make them welcome and get off their backs...they're grieving ya know; cut them some slack. If they haven't made the switch, you're not going to see them on the Seti boards...so why come hunting for them over here?
The vast majority of BOINC users were Seti-Classic users at one time. Does it really matter when/if you switched to Seti-Boinc? You're using BOINC here and now. Let's focus on why we're HERE: to advance the science of one or more projects...not to bash those who switched soonest, or held on 'til the last, of an enormously successful project that has moved forward itself.

It's exactly this same kind of crap that we got on the SETI BOINC boards that drove so many dedicated people away...
Hopefully, you aren't typical of the users here at Einstein...

Some how this thread has reminded me of the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. That was a story of grief and compassion, the grief of the mariner and the compassion of the wedding guest. I wonder how many times the mariner said ‘there was a ship’ before someone tarried long enough to hear the rest of the story. I can understand the grief, the lack of empathy and compassion is beyond my comprehension. Can we on this board at least just respect the sense loss of so many obviously feel.

I am quite comfortable with what I see in the mirror. Did yours come from a circus perhaps? You deleted what I considered the key portion of that quote:
Quote:

I then went on to give equal time/castigation to the Seti-Boincers as well:
Quote:

I'll ask you straight out: Why are YOU here on Einstein? To piss and moan over a (successfully) completed project, or to contribute to the science of this one?
The tone and flavor of my posts are public record for anyone to look at. Just click on my ID to the left, then click on Message Board Posts. I stand by what I've written...and the projects I've crunched for.
Before you start saying that the BOINC/Seti people are unwelcoming I suggest you read the Seti Q & A boards first and see where the bad feelings start, and then read the reply's. Also read the Good Messages from Questions/problems thread.
Yes, there are a few who don't have much sympathy with the wingers and whiners, but when you keep seeing the same questions/complaints week after week because the questioners can't be bothered reading/researching before jumping in, what do you expect.
And don't forget probably 99% of BOINC Seti crunchers were Seti Classic crunchers originally.
