First time mac user

I have a few Macs running the standard gui, haven't tried the other option.

The menubar one may run automatically after a reboot? the standard gui doesn't, although I could probably make it do so if I delve into the BSD Unix underneath Mac OS X GUI.

Unless you want it to run "invisible", go for the Standard GUI. The Menubar is a "cut-down" version, with many fewer features, and much less support.

Both will run automatically at login - just need to say "yes" to the option during install, or, add BOINC Manager to the startup items, if you didn't do that. I don't think either run automatically when nobody is logged in, unlike the Windows "service install", but you _can_ set up the screensaver to work even then, which would launch the BOINC daemon...

Can someone point me to instructions for installing the MacNN boinc superbench client. I tried clinking on the icon after downloading but I got a message saying that the os did not know what to do with the file.

Mark,

I'm not Mac-literate, but in Windows, I just put the file in the Boinc folder, replacing the existing file. However, it was boinc.exe that was the optimized file, not boincmgr.exe. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Michael

Mark,

Again, this pertains to the optimized Win version - so whatever caveats apply...
I was running 5.2.7 at the time. I did not have to uninstall anything - the optimized piece that I downloaded was only a 276KBfile, which I had only to rename to boinc.exe and then move to the Boinc folder. No xml files, no dll, no text files, just the meat, the boinc.exe, which does the benchmarking.

Check this message and the two surrounding it for reference.

(edit) - I suspect that you are getting hung at the same point that I was, thinking that the optimized client was a complete installation. It is not. Download and install 5.2.13, that will create the Boinc folder. Then take the optimized file rename it to whatever is the equivalent "stock" boinc file, delete the file that is being replaced, and insert the optimized in to the folder to replace it.
