MSRP for the 5950X was $799.

For one weekend both Amazon and Newegg were selling stock for $533.

I got it for even less because I applied $97 banked Amazon bucks to the purchase.

Looks like it has gone back to around $550 now.

Does the Ryzen 5950x seem to be running cooler than a 3950x in Over Clocking?

No, the 5950X runs hotter than the 3950X as expected since it runs 300Mhz faster than the 3950X ever could.

yup, 5950X runs hotter. more

yup, 5950X runs hotter. more performance came at the cost of higher temps and power draw.

Rats.  I hate it when Thermodynamics is linear....

So if you take the OC off or at least lower it, it should use less power than a 3950x at the same GHz?

Never tried that but logically that conclusion is valid.  The process inprovement from Zen 2 to Zen 3 allows for lower VID at the lower clocks. But actual testing will need to be done to confirm.

Set the 5950X to 4125Mhz and run the voltage down to the lowest voltage needed to maintain stability under your loads.

Discussions in other threads

Discussions in other threads about reducing boinc crunching leads to my question.

Which is more power efficient for crunching?

A Ryzen 3950x or an Epyc 7402p ? I will have both available.

If I have to start a seasonal shutdown which should cost the least to run?

Define power efficient.

Define power efficient.  Lowest wall power consumed?  Or lowest watts per RAC production?

Excellent points.

I think I was conflating two measurements.

If I really have scale back it would be lowest power draw from wall.

If you take the TDP for each it seems to be clear that a 3950x will draw less power. Unless the 7402p draws a lot less power without CPU boost then it is likely the 3950x will be the winner.

Mumble.

Just have to drop the rtx 3080 TI offline and get out my killawatt meter to see.
