Topic 209493

Welcome to the next installment of the game!!

Simple rules:
- Post in this thread, anything with a coherent message (ie one word posts don't count)
- Stay within the message board rules
- Empty posts are invalid towards winning
- You must wait for someone else to post before you can post again, any and all multiple posts are invalid towards winning
- Have FUN

Rules Subject to change at moderators discretion without notice. In fact, at some point this post will be updated with details on how to win. The update will not be announced and the first person to notice the change can win. So Chris won't have to be afraid to win as it's not going to be certain post-number that will grant someone the victory.

The winner will be the last person that posted, when I have time to check the thread, after one of these events:
- A specific date and/or time occurs
- You ask a specific someone else in this thread to declare you the winner of this thread while referring to the topic start, that person then needs to agree, also in this thread.
You can only ask once, until the specified person replies, upon declining you can ask again.
Bonus points if you ask someone who wants to win him/herself.
- A specific number of posts have been made in this thread or another
- I get tired of ya'll nagging me who is the winner :)
- An event I have chosen occurs (doesn't occur)

Sorry there are no physical prizes, only the satisfaction you played and won. :)

Aha ! I seemed to have

Aha ! I seemed to have pressed the correct buttons .... and I forgot to say congrats on your numerically superior strategy. Or as Jeremy Irons said in Margin Call :

"There are three ways to make a living in this business; be first, be smarter, or cheat. Now, I don't cheat. And although I like to think we have some pretty smart people in this building, it sure is a hell of a lot easier to just be first."

Cheers, Mike.

Well done Mike.

Well I thank 'ee my good Sir for your kind indulgence. Reverses previous direction of travel tugging extraneous tuft of cranial protuberance ....

Isn't that much better than a fixed number that you might trip over unintentionally? We can all enjoy the repartee and jollity without getting lumbered with running the next one if we don't want to.

* always pays to read the small print :-))

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

In this case I guess it was

In this case I guess it was more about being last (You know, tLptpw). And being last is a lot easier then being first.

In fact, being last when everyone else tries to be first is not at all a challenge.
The strategy on winning a TLPTPW is rather simple though. If it's a random post number to win, just make sure you post the most possible messages and you get the largest possible chance to win.

But in this instance of TLPTPW it's not going to be a random post number.

Reminds me of slow bike races

Reminds me of slow bike races ie. last across the line wins. While improbably skilful and often humorous to watch, I can't last beyond about 15 minutes of viewing. Having said that, the Moto3 racing ( 125 cc ) is curious on many occasions because on the last few laps being first is not necessarily a bonus, unless you are well away from the field. With the slipstreaming that is so common in ( relatively ) low horsepower events .....

Speaking of The Low Countries : the wonderful Assen racing circuit. Technically very challenging for most riders, even the top level guys, plus a large degree of bravery and superb timing to achieve even modest results. As an Aussie I am disappointed it took Mick Doohan out of the business. You just can't hop on one leg at 140 km/h and expect all to turn out well.

Cheers, Mike.

just make sure you post the most possible messages and you get the largest possible chance to win.

That is called spamming and is very much frowned upon in Boinc projects.

But double posting makes them

But double posting makes them invalid, either way, as stated, this won't be for a random post number to get a win. As encouraging spamming on the forum here is not the intention of course.

In Boinc projects getting the highest possible score is achieved by sending as many completed work units back to the server as possible, rather similar but not at all frowned upon.

If you want the greatest possible chance to win on this thread you best program something to monitor the topic start and alert you on a change so you can be the first to respond to that change.

Slow bike races I have never watched but can imagine what it's like. Like not wanting to put a foot on the ground when waiting for a traffic light, lasting long definitely requires skill. Normally I would not bother, but then try the same with your shoes fixed to the pedals.

Chris. You have no special

Chris. You have no special status here. It is inappropriate for you to be advising any or all upon matters that pertain to the behaviour of others. You would be well advised to focus purely upon your own performance as a cooperative, friendly and welcome participant. This warning is public and thus will cause you some embarassment. This I choose to do, not out of personal malice as I hold none, but in order to make the discomfort that you have caused for very many others quite real to you, as you have not demonstrated any evidence of ability to consider the comfort of others. This has been the case for quite a while and subject to discussion at project level.

So no, do not PM me yet again. Do not reply to this in any fashion. This is a first & final warning. You will be banned for a significant time period triggered by the very next occasion that you create any irritation whatsoever, even if only merely apparent. I can and will ensure from this time onwards that you will only be seen to contribute absolutely positively to the community here as described, or not be seen at all.

My language here is definite & unambiguous, so do not entertain any attempt of pretense at misunderstanding.

Mike.
