Of course Annie you have to

Of course Annie you have to realise that our Colonial cousins do not have the Queens English as their first language.

A tool is a device or implement, especially one held in the hand, used to carry out a particular function.

A mechanical tool can be a machine used to aid in a particular engineering task.

It can also mean  to "tool" up as to become armed, especially for criminal activity.

Else it can mean to ornament, embellish, decorate, as in tooling the leather cover of a book.

Depends whether you are using verbs or adjectives, or other grammatical expressions. We British don't use North Americanisms like "tooling around" or vulgar descriptions of body parts.

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

What about the Urban

What about the Urban dictionary tool?

In that sense I guess a tool is a fool.

I usually find a machine on

I usually find a machine on the end and it is less than useless and it won't let you pass to anyone else who might be helpful.

Up until the beginning of last week I would have completely concurred with that. Gary. Or no one answering the call at all... but I appear to have been cursed with the pleasure of dealing with the same kind of people who instead of declaring my son an adult at age eighteen, declared him an illegal immigrant and summonsed him to appear before them pending his deportation - that it was from the country he was born in didn't seem to interest them at all.

We British don't use [...] vulgar descriptions of body parts.

Rly?

All the vulgar descriptions for body parts I know, I learned after coming to Britain.

Neither do most of you, Chris - speaking as an outsider from a colony of course. Those silver spoons must cause all sorts of speech impediments. Anyway, I hope you won't mind if I go with Gary's:

The means whereby some act is accomplished

...for now?  Do please challenge that in the tool thread once it has been identified if you want to though :) There's bound to be plenty of setizens who will support your stance. I'll be calling in on them myself soon. Unless they've all abandoned me there to talk to myself... *frank blink at einsteinians* it wouldn't be the first time...

:)

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

The last bloke who spoke the Queen's Englush DownUnda was Bob Menzies in 1965. An outstanding forelock tugger he was. If he walked past her portrait he'd bow so quickly as to overshoot and his forehead would go whack on his kneecaps every time. His retainers installed a pad on his front nonce to dull the blow. He used to go on about how glorious her toenails were and stuff. I reckon he must have held her hand once or kissed her little pinky perhaps. In 1966 we went from Englush money of pounds/shilling/pence to dollars and cents. Especially : six pence became five cents and forever after Bob was known as the bloke that pinched all those extra one pences. And that was just the Treasury officials complaining.

.... as for Chucky ? Well, what a good example he is of the dangers of inbreeding ..... if Lizzy falls major ill I reckon she ought be kept technically alive by modern machinery until his assassination by MI21 * passing, so as to avoid the succession .....

Cheers, Mike.

* British Military SubIntelligence Section 21 : part of the War Office in charge of killing undesirable home royalty. Section 22 does foreign royals. The whole Diana/Dodi thing was merely a side effect of these two departments ragging on each other about tea trolley priority. Section 29 supports subversives in Gibraltar. Section 30 combats subversives in Gibraltar. Section 31 arbitrates between conflicting groups in Gibraltar. Section 32 just wants to nuke or sink the bloody rock, whatever. For tax reasons all are based on the Isle Of Pretty Much Off Wight Say Alabaster Or Eggshell. Section 81 discredits & smears difficult ex-colonial doctors, so don't listen to everything you might hear 'bout that .....

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

We had a bloke once called

We had a bloke once called Wilson who devalued the pound from $2.80 to $2.40 in 1967 and famously said "It does not mean that the pound here in Britain, in your pocket or purse or in your bank, has been devalued." Of course for goods produced at home that was partly true, but retailers sourcing items or ingredients from abroad paid more for them and passed the cost onto the consumer. Also it might have meant our goods were cheaper abroad but we got less for them.

Then we had decimalisation in 1971 and of course many retailers rounded up to the nearest whole penny. And where you had items priced at £4 19s 11d, they became £4.99p, and we followed the American tradition of printing the 99 in smaller figures i.e. £4.99 because it looked cheaper than the £5 psychological barrier.

Prince Charles will never be a popular King with Camilla by his side, but he has served dutifully all his life as the Prince of Wales, so I reckon he deserves his crack at it. Hopefully a short one before he hands over to William.

The MI Depts were dissolved in 1964, but sections 29-31 are still needed as evidence proves. There was an undocumented Section 20 on the Isle of Grain, that safeguarded our oil supplies during the Cold War.

@Annie - the only silver spoon that I had was a christening present with a pusher. It went missing over the years. Oh, and remind me not to discuss body parts with you would you? Thanks :-)

@all - The OED is the quintessential reference work for the etymology of words, but if people prefer to use slang or street talk, that is their choice.

Section 31 is an officially

Section 31 is an officially nonexistent autonomous intelligence and defense organization. It is ... a special security operation, manned by Federation citizens, that is not subject to the normal constraints of Starfleet ethical protocols.

Old business: Time Warp from the 2015 live theatre broadcast live to other theatres all over Europe version that I got moderated for quoting too heavily here. (This link goes specifically to the beginning of Time Warp. If anyone wants to go back to the beginning and watch all the naughty bits I quoted, that's not my fault.)

New business: If anyone has Microsoft Train Simulator, you can currently buy Illinois Railway Museum as a route, with proceeds going to the TP&W 800 fund[/url]. We only have until October to raise $65,000 for purchase, transportation (from New Jersey), and track space, or it will be sold for scrap instead.

Meanwhile back in the real

Meanwhile back in the real world, I support Australia's bid to become a republic. Why not? We don't need them for anything in the Commonwealth.

In the lead-up to the 2010 federal election, then Prime Minister Julia Gillard stated "I believe that this nation should be a republic. I also believe that this nation has got a deep affection for Queen Elizabeth." It was her view that it would be appropriate for Australia to become a republic only once Queen Elizabeth II's reign ends.

I wouldn't think that Chucky or anyone else would have any objection. The only condition would be the banning of imports of the stuff Ozzies laughingly call beer e.g. Castlemaine and Fosters etc. But we would allow the Paul Hogan ads to continue, and we enjoy a good laugh at Aussie attitudes to women in the Castlemaine 2 bottles of sweet sherry ad. Keep ''em coming :-)

Hopefully Lizzie will see at least her 100th in 2026, so  they've got some time to wait, hopefully Sir Les Patterson won't have caused a break in diplomatic relations before then.

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)
