Many non-Spaniards view

Many non-Spaniards view paella as Spain's national dish, but most Spaniards consider it to be a regional Valencian dish. Valencians, in turn, regard paella as one of their identifying symbols. Valencian paella is believed to be the original recipe.

I am not fond of rice dishes Sir Rodney, whether regional Spanish or not. Valencia doesn't have any natural resources, and its economy relies on tourism and citrus groves, and its Paella fame.

I still think beer is

I still think beer is disgusting, but I've been trying out different types of wine lately to see if I like any of them. So far, I find moscato to be drinkable and pink moscato verging on enjoyable. A little while ago, I went to open a bottle of sweet red and discovered it had a cork. Okay, I have a corkscrew around here... somewhere... Hmm, must be in that bag of little used utensils hanging on the pantry doorknob that I can't get to because of stuff in the way. And just as I was typing, I realized I have at least one pocket knife with a corkscrew on it. Now, where's that?...

What kind of taste do you

What kind of taste do you like? Sweet, Bitter, Savory, Sour, etc.  Describe your taste and I can probably direct you to a wine you might like.

Sweet and not like alcohol.

Sweet and not like alcohol. Next time I get off my butt, I'll check the fridge to see the types I didn't like.

[edit]
The moscatos I liked were Gallo. I did not like the Gallo cabernet sauvignon and something else dark. I also did not like the Dark Horse rose'.

As a rough guide French

As a rough guide French whites tend to be a bit dry, French reds strong, Calfornian stuff is OK'ish, Spanish wines best left for cooking. German white wines are sweeter, but I find italian wines not to my taste, but I had an expensive Chianti once I quite liked. But in recent years wines from Chile have been getting rave reviews.

If you like red wine try a Chateauneuf du Pape but you will pay for a decent one, any of the better Burgundys are nice like Pinot Noir.  Cabernet Sauvigon tends to be a bit coarse to my taste. For a medium white try a Chardonnay, or for a sweeter one a German Liebfraumilch. Then there is everyday Sauvignon Blanc. If you are into sparkling wines despite what I said above, try Freixenet Cordon Negro Cava Brut, a steal at today's prices and beats Moet & Chandon hands down. Don't bother with Frascati, it's so weak it shouldn't really be called a wine at all!

Rose's I know nothing about, seems to be 1/2 a glass of white and 1/2 glass of red mixed, not one thing or the other. I also haven't touched on port which should be left to breathe and decanted. LBV's are better value in the lower ranges than vintage or crusted. I find the Ruby a bit plummy but the 10 year old tawny's have a bit of oomph in them. Taylors, Dows or Warres are good choices.  I've also left Sherrys to one side as they are really aperitifs.

In the UK, the Which? report regularly give supermarkets own wines top marks, often beating the more expensive stuff from wine merchants.  Of course they are standard wines just re-labelled, but bulk buying drops the prices.

Just try a range over time and decide which suits you, everyone's palate is different. The higher quality stuff comes with a cork which wine buffs sniff to gauge the wine before drinking it. But most popular stuff comes in screw caps these days, which does mean that a 1/2 bottle will keep over night, or otherwise you can buy plastic stoppers.  Sacrilege to wine experts, but hey that is real life if you just want one glass for a meal at home.

I must end with a moan!! Why do 1/2 bottles of wine cost 75% of a full bottle, that is a widespread rip off :-( Is the glass more expensive than the wine inside?

I am just a simple amateur, I know bugger all really about wines (as you can see), but after 50 years I've tried most stuff and I know what suits me. Carlos sounds like he knows more than me though so his advice is likely to be better.

I'll touch on beers in another post, not getting caught at the bar again!
