Just stopping by while watching a new install of Windows 7 (again)

206 Windows Updates now.......an I thought 120 was a lot last time.
Up to 161 after many hours
I did this about a week ago but decided to do the last 12 updates which thanks to some dope here in Redmond (Microsoft) forgot something and when you reboot you get a black screen of death with some numbers on it.
After hours of trying to figure it out I found out it was some mistake they made and found the repair update to bring it back to life and now I have to do the 206 again.....but no way in hell will I d/l that last 12 again since this is just for crunching and even without the 206 Updates it works fine.
I guess thats what I get for even figuring out why Update wasn't even working to begin with.
I've got a Win10 machine that's updating and failing twice a day every day, I'm going to put Linux on it today and be done with it!! Like your machine it's JUST a cruncher, albiet for me a dual quad core Intel Xeon machine, so 16 cpu cores to crunch with. When it tries and fails at the latest Win10 updates it's down for over an hour as it tries to update and then fails and resets itself back to where it was before the latest update. It's been running Win10 for a long time and it works fine except for these latest problems!! I will use a spare hard drive to do it just in case MS ever figures things out.
It's not KB3213986 that's giving you grief is it? Two days in a row when I checked my PC in the morning and after work it had rebooted with that one. Apparently a fix is to download the nearly 1Gig update and manually install it. The first words that popped into my head were the impolite version of "go away" and then I shut off updates. Problem solved.

The only problem I had with Win 10 Updates was it does that reboot in 5 days or less and when you have 5 pc's with that version you can forget what day and it just reboots on its own and if it needs a password or the PIN it just sits there waiting.
This one is one of my two with Win 7 and I forget which KB it is but Microsoft admits they forgot one that caused major crash after doing the 206 and trying to reboot.....the average user would be paying for somebody to fix this disaster.
But I did the 206 and just now the reboot and d/ing the new .vdi version since this is one I use at LHC and haven't put the old 550Ti card in yet.
It now has another 28 Updates to do but that is when the disaster happened last time and even though I have that KB fix done already I still don't trust it.
The main thing is it has enough updates for crunching and now the pages fit the screen and it looks normal and does this so I may just leave it like this for a while........the other Win 7 I did a clean install not long ago that only needed the 120 Updates didn't do this so the mistake they made was between the 120 and the 206......and that one has my 660Ti in it so I am glad it didn't do this.
Now I have to wait for my slow DSL to d/l this 249.77MB .vdi that LHC has us do over and over (including the 6 years at vLHC) they can take 30 mins to 3hrs thanks to CenturyStink dsl

Yes that's exactly the one and I tried that and it still didn't work for me!! I took the hard drive out and installed Ubuntu Linux yesterday, now no more problems for me either!! BUT I like the idea of stopping the updates too, I have Win10 running on SSD drives while Linux is running on an older regular drive so is slightly slower.
My only problem with Linux is that my VNC program doesn't like it like Windows does so I use Putty but I have to know the ip address before it will connect, I usually end up walking into the computer room and plugging a monitor and looking at it manually. I already have 1 full time Linux machines and if I can't solve the update problems I may end up with a few more!! They are just crunchers though, I do not use them for anything else.

You may not need to know the IP address. For example if you have a node by the name of "pluto" (no quotes) then you might try to ping pluto.local or ssh pluto.local i.e., ping by hostname.local

Has anyone tried Teamviewer on Linux? It has a Linux version, but I tried to install it on my Pi and it keeps erroring out. I'm not home at the moment or I'd try it again and tell you exactly what the message says.

Has anyone tried Teamviewer on Linux? It has a Linux version, but I tried to install it on my Pi and it keeps erroring out. I'm not home at the moment or I'd try it again and tell you exactly what the message says.
No haven't tried it. BUT Raspberian is a LITE Linux. It likely needs some libraries that aren't part of the normal lite install to be put in place, then it might go. Or it may not be compatible with the R PI video.
Unless you have a special need for team viewer, VNC is pre-installed on the PI and does a very good job. It also can be configured with extra security.
