Trials and tribulations aside, you all are forgetting something.
I have had my share of pain the last few days learning some new linux stuff, but it all pales in comparison to the fact that I am winning.

Ah, pain.
As I just mentioned in the new Pi thread, I just took my own first plunge into Linux with a Pi.
Moreover, though, I've been in actual pain a lot over the last month or so. I've been whining about it so much at Seti, I forgot I haven't here. (Or have I?)
December 1: I dropped a can of Febreze on my big toe. It hurt a lot for a couple of days, and is still sensitive to touch. It is also still blue -- very dark blue -- at the base of the nail, perhaps even growing.
Approximately the same time: I started to have minor pain at the top of my right calf, just below the knee. Sometimes, I would need a few seconds after standing up before I could walk on it. Then, the night of December 16, I walked around on it for 3.5 hours continuously. At the end of that, it was hurting a LOT and I could barely walk. It was also very painful to bend my knee to get in the car and drive home, especially since driving involves precision use of that particular muscle and joint. Before going to sleep, I had the forethought to make sure I had a cane within reach when I got up. This proved to be extremely good thinking; even with the cane, I was barely able to hobble to the bathroom, although by the time I got there I could stand without it and just carry it back... most of the time, and still limping. Needless to say, I stayed home all weekend.
Remember, all of the above was on the right. Monday morning, when I got dressed for work, I discovered that my left foot was swollen. Puffed up like a giant Rice Krispie. I had to loosen the laces in that shoe to get it on. I also had to loosen the right one because I couldn't put the necessary force on that leg to get into the shoe. That day after work, I went to the convenient care. They asked me a lot of questions, said to take extra ibuprofen, and then sent me over to the hospital for an ultrasound of the right knee. It found I did not have a DVT or Baker's cyst. I didn't think to mention the left foot that evening.
Wednesday: took my aunt to see a podiatrist about her foot pain (as expected, plantar fascitis), but I could barely walk myself. Also started getting a cramp in my right thigh, mainly when bending the knee to relieve the calf pain.
Thursday: left foot still swollen. Sent my dr. a message about it.
Friday: off work. Nurse called and said I should go back to convenient care. Before walking in, dug my other cane out of the back of the car, just because it was raining and I thought it would freeze by the time I came out. However, the right knee nearly dumped me while walking over for an x-ray of the left foot. It showed no fractures or anything, just arthritis. They gave me a scrip for something I'd never heard of, not naproxen but something else sodium. [edit] Diclofenac sodium, aka Voltaren DR. To be honest, it doesn't impress me. [/edit] Then they dispensed it from the Instymeds machine in the corner of the waiting room.
Rested again all day Saturday and decided my pain was low enough to drive a couple hours each way to visit relatives for Christmas on Sunday. It was uncomfortable, but my biggest problem there was an apparent resurgence of allergy to their cats. I was having a lot of trouble breathing by the time I left. Even drove parts of the way home with the window open for fresh air.
Next nine days: mostly stayed home and rested it. By January 3, I was able to go down to the basement and carry my laundry up using the right leg normally.
Jan. 4: rode the train to Pontiac, MI. Walking/standing around Union Station for about 35 minutes between the Metra in and the Amtrak out was starting to make the calf feel tight again, but it was okay once I sat down.
Jan. 5: saw my dr. Ironically, left foot was not swollen that day. She sent me back to the hospital for US of the left knee just to make to make sure the swelling wasn't a DVT (it wasn't) and x-ray of the right knee to see if it has arthritis. Negative for fracture or malalignment. Normal mineralization. Mild joint space loss of the medial compartment with small tricompartmental osteophytes. No patellar subluxation. Minor enthesopathy of the quadriceps insertion. No joint effusion. Mild regional soft tissue calcification. I'm taking this to mean minor arthritis there too, but the joint won't be a candidate for replacement anytime soon. [edit] Could "mild regional soft tissue calcification" mean the calf muscle is doing the same thing as my aunt's foot and that's why it hurts? [/edit]
This week: back to work, some pain but liveable. Knee doesn't quite have its previous range of motion, but I can still manage to put a sock on. Left foot has just enough pain to let me know it's there, even when it's not swollen.
Meanwhile, my insurance deductible kicked in again on the 1st, so after the network discounts are calculated I'll have to pay for the dr. visit, the second US, and the second x-ray. Heck, that might use up my entire annual deductible right there.
I forgot to mention to the dr. that I've suspected for quite a while that I also have arthritis in my right hand and wrist.
Getting old sucks. Probably wouldn't suck as much if I didn't weigh so much, but I do.

Last night and this morning, the leg was feeling good enough to do the stairs, but both feet were swollen this morning. However, by the time I got to work the leg was feeling a bit sore again.
Meanwhile, I had just a bit of a sore throat last night, and this morning when I tried to speak for the first time in about 36 hours, I discovered I was more than a bit hoarse.

My dear Sir, you misunderstand. My good lady's aspirations were admirably met by the Gullwing I helped her father restore before our nuptials. The keys were presented to us on the big day. :-) When it proved impractical to transport more than one dearly beloved travelling companion with one, it was returned, but still makes for a nice drive when we're in Morocco. :-)
could likely tour the circumference of your British Overseas Territorial island in about 10 minutes. Well normally it could do, but the last time I was there a few years ago staying at Navy digs at Europa Point, there was a landslide in the tunnel on the south side, and it was blocked off.
For a price, there are people who arrange these things. Perhaps they did ;-)

During ALOGONALOFSH (A-lot-of-on-going-not-a-lot-of-fun-stuff-happening) Clusters of the kind you've described, Phil *blink expertly*...keep a teaspoon about your person. It's just a little thing with a flattened roundish concave section at the end, but it will at least mean you won't have to consider stirring your cup of soup with your cane just because the correct implement is miles away on the draining board over there. At least that's what I found. It's also useful to draw someone's full attention with when you pull it out of your pocket, and your only surprise is that you can't take notes with it.
