Mikey,

Can you do me a favor??? In Win 10; try adding a printer, use Windows Update to pick a driver, select HP for the brand, and tell me if there is a 4000, or 4050 series PCL-6 driver available in Win 10. Also, see if the old 4ML is listed. I have a Networked 4ML and a 4000TN printer setup on all five of our machines. Win 7 x64 and XP Pro x64 have no issue with these two printers; however, Win 8 on my uncle's tablet refused to find a proper driver for the 4000TN; and didn't see the 4ML at all. I fear that Win 10 will kill the existing drivers I have for these two printers.

Thanks, TL

The 4ML is not listed directly, but the 4 itself is listed with both pcl-5 and pcl-6 drivers. The 4050 is listed as is the 4000 'series' pcl-5 and pcl-6 drivers, but the 4000TN is not listed directly either.

Thank you very much. :-) The 4000 series driver is the driver for the 4000TN; if that hadn't been there, the 4050 driver would work. As for the 4ML; the 4 driver may work; but I don't know for sure. (4000, T - Second Tray, N - Networked.)

These printers are OLD now... The 4ML is from 1993, and the 4000TN from 1998. The 4ML is Networked via a Netgear Print Server PS-101 unit connected to the Parallel port on the printer. Both printers are assigned statically.

Thanks again, this is a HUGE help to me.

No problem. If you have a spare hard drive you can load Win10 on it and then see how it works all for free, mine is running on a refurbed 160gb drive I picked up for $20. You have to download the file and then burn it to a dvd, but there are no 'validation' numbers right now as it's still in testing. Mine came with some but I never had to put them in, it just worked, mine are the same as everyone elses. If you try it I think you will like it, especially if you are not a fan of Win8. YES it has some 'tiles' from Win8, but they aren't HUGE and intrusive like in Win8. Of course they moved things around again, they always seem to do that, but the search box still works you just have to be careful you aren't searching the internet for your command. For instance I did a search on 'add a printer' for you and the only place it found it was on the net. A different search term, 'printers' came up with the 'devices' page and from there it was pretty easy to do it the same old way. I STILL have not found the 'my computer' icon though, I can get to 'properties' etc, just no 'my computer'.

Scott, can you set the printer setup on the XP or the 7 to be shared and then use it from 8 that way?

Moot point, now. My uncle already went home. However; yes, they were already shared on Exeter, (the XP Pro x64 system), and 8 still didn't pick it up... 8, like 7, only sees "current" OSes on the Network.

Besides; what I wanted Mikey to check out was for when I decide to upgrade our Win 7 machines to 10. I didn't want 10 breaking the printer drivers and leaving us unable to print.

Just do it slowly, one at a time, as they have more changes coming and who knows what will actually be there in the end.

For those of you interested

For those of you interested in Win 10: 7 versions being offered (not all will be free upgrades). Still on track for this summer.

On another note: its my understanding that Win 10 will run on a PI2. Fascinating.

MS also released some Nvidia 'certified and signed' drivers today too that are designed for Win10. I don't know if they work in other versions or not though.

I did receive an announcement

I did receive an announcement through NVIDIA GeForce EXPERIENCE detailing the release of a new driver: 352.86. Here is what it had to say:

Just in time for the highly anticipated title The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, this new GeForce Game Ready driver ensures you'll have the best possible gaming experience. With support for GeForce SLI technology and one-click game setting optimizations within GeForce Experience, you'll have the best possible performance and image quality during gameplay. In addition, this driver is aligned with today's launch of the world's fastest gaming GPU; the GeForce GTX Titan X. I was not aware of this "new" GPU.

But will this driver, or any new driver for that matter, shorten the run time of E@H GPU tasks? I currently use v320.78 on a GeForce GTX 420, and every time I update the driver I ask myself this question.

If all you do is crunch the best idea is to watch and wait whenever new drivers come out, most drivers benefit gamers sometimes even to the detriment of us crunchers. If a driver is faster for us people should be posting everywhere saying how good it is for us. I have several Nvidia gpu's and the drivers on each are not the same, one is using driver: 34788, one is using driver: 34752 and another is using driver: 35012. I don't notice enough of a difference in the task completion times to say any speed up is due to the driver.

Just noticed that win10 will also feature a new browser: Spartan. Is this the end of IE?

That's the plan, whether it works or not remains to be seen. I have been crunching on a Win10 preview machine for almost 2 months now and there are no problems other than a small VNC glitch compared to a regular Win7 machine. Some times I have to click to activate the box, then click on what I want on the Win10 machine, while the Win7 machines just lets me do stuff with much fewer clicks. I'm guessing it's because it is not 'refined' yet, at least I hope so as I use VNC ALOT.

Just noticed this in today´s press MS issue AMD GPU crash warning with Project Spartan (aka Edge)
