Hi,

As to the screensaver: With 4.79, the screen would go black, the starsphere would show for about a second, go black again, and then return to the desktop. No lockups or GPF of any kind after the return.

With .3 it is exactly the same, "Show Graphics" works fine (and is beautiful), but the screensaver acts exactly as described for 4.79.

HTH

Just tried it on my rig and it worked fine for me.
Does other screensavers behave like that?
Wonder if there are other OpenGL-screensavers out there to test?

RE: We have a new version

Quote:

We have a new version of the Einstein@Home application ready for testing on Windows. Please see
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/app_test.php for details of how to install and test this on your Windows computer.

This application contains many fixes to the BOINC library, including the "ATI graphics driver" issue.

Please use this thread to report success or problems with this application.

Hi,

No problem for my computer with the new E@H version 03 under Win XP Pro SP2 with an ATI Radeon 9200SE 128Mo. The appl. is managed by Boinc 4.43 (with Seti, Protein, Climate) , graphics are OK from Boinc Manager "Show graphics" or with Einstein@Home as Screen saver. BUT it was allready OK for V 4.79 of Einstein.

Note : I have configured Boinc in a slightly different way than preconized. I use "Run always" but the Boinc service (under XP) is not configured with a personnal account. In the second part of the property sheet of the Boinc Service, I use Open a session with the local "system" account instead of a real one, and with the check box "This service can interact with desktop" enabled (sorry but my XP is localized in french, and I don't remember exactly the english version of the MicrosSoft ).
I don't know if it can explain or solve some issue, but it's like this. If I have any computation problem with this BetaVersion, I'll send you a new message,

Regards.

I just tried starfield and 3D windows and they work fine. (I am now hypnotized.)
All I have on my box to try are the Windows defaults.
I'm real tired now, but tomorrow I'll see if there are newer drivers for the card and report.

It's a basic entry card, so I think my experience can be discounted. I'm glad it's working for all of you! :)

I never use any SS in real life, so it's not an issue for me.

A lot...but again, when a new app is released (newer than both 4.79 and 0.03) will our BOINC client automatically update it?

Now I get it!

No, with participating in this beta test you actually switched the platform from "x86-windows" to "anonymous". The client will never replace an anonymous App by itself. However the machines that are still running the "official" 4.79 App will download and use a newer Windows App when it is available automatically.

Does this answer your question?

BM

Yes it definately does. In that case I will go back to 4.79 and eagerly await the new app version (I've already reported my feedback above).

However, how do I do that? When I deleted app_info.xml and all the einstein 0.03 stuff the BOINC manager got stuck on 'connecting to localhost'. What do I delete to make it run 4.79 again?

EDIT: I think I got it...am waiting for new app version!

Oops - when the app_info.xml is deleted the Client should just look for the 4.79 and download it again if it isn't there. Of course you must terminate the client (not only close the boinc manager window) before you delete the app_info.xml, but I think you guessed this (though it's not explicitely in the instructions) - did you? If not, it's our fault, if so, there's something wrong with the Client...

Running great on my Pentium

Running great on my Pentium D840 dual core 3.2ghz.

5 units completed with an average of 25908 per core/unit. (7.2 hours per unit or an average of 1 work unit every 3.6 hours. ) Two units have validated and three are pending validation. So far so good.

It would be cool if you could eventually compile an SSE, SSE2, SSE3 version for Windows.

Yes...I would love to have a specifically SSE2 optimized version for Windows.

Shaktai, you've got a dual core Pentium D 840. You don't NEED any optimizations! ;)

Awww Shucks!!! How about if I said I would only use it on my "other" PC boxes and not the D 840?
(Note the "if" word and per the Sarbanes Oxely act and any other completly unrelated act or pending act or legistlation, relevent or irrelevant, understand that the above statement is not a commitment to not run it on any platform of my choice that may or may not provide benefit either real or imagined.) ;-)

I once compiled the code with SSE optimization and found it to be about 1% faster than without, so there's not much in the normal code that the compiler found to be suitable for SSE.

One _might_ get further porting the vector code that was (re-)written for the AltiVec to SSE (actually SS2 as I doubt that SSE offers enough precision) but this would need more work again and would end up with yet another code version to be maintained. We are aiming for the "auto-vectorize" feature of the new gcc-4, which should give us generic code as well as code for multiple vector units from the same source code, but it will will also take some more time until it is mature enough to be of use for us.
