My guess is that the "missing" pattern after deployment would indicate the location position of that parachute on the capsule. They could then "look at that position/location" and try to determine what went wrong.

My idea was also of different "sewing" designs being tested too.

If I've read things correctly then one day Orion is going to return from way out wherever on a hyperbolic path ie. coming in like the clappers with a huge delta_v to consume. Every step in abrading/ablating that kinetic energy is crucial ie. retro burns, heat shields etc. You can't miss either ie. no 'free return' on error. I just keep thinking of the prolonged hard radiation when outside of Earth's magnetic influence. How does that degrade components eg. does parachute suturing weaken ? There's a million failure pathways out there.

I once did a kinetic-energy to heat-energy calculation for a Space Shuttle re-entry. Back of the envelope estimate : one knows the vehicle mass plus the velocities before and after, and the time the manouevre takes. It does these huge surfing sweep curves across the upper atmosphere, high over the Pacific to land in continental US. I found that for about twenty minutes each square metre of underside tile had to shave kinetic energy at the rate of around two MegaWatts. Wow !!

Cheers, Mike.

What I love is the calculation that I read, that if Santa and his sleigh and reindeer had to visit every child in the world on Christams Eve, he and they would have to travel so fast they would be burnt up in the atmosphere!!!

Shhhhhhh .....

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

Why do doctors have to practice?
You'd think they'd have got it right by now

My calculation for the Space

My calculation for the Space Shuttle tiles was an average over the underside, many spots would be easily doing, say, 10 MW per m^2. And that's only for a low Earth orbit return. I reckon what you want is to bring back a chunk of asteroid strapped underneath and let it abrade ... :-)

You couldn't rely on that though : "Can't go home yet, we haven't found our heat shield".

Cheers, Mike.

Which is why we need naughty children :) They're the only reason Santa doesn't travel by urn.

@Mike impressive calculations :)

I got to: "ooh - very hot" and stopped :)

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

Stunning/Silly/Self-Evident

Stunning/Silly/Self-Evident Sunday Epiphany *light globe sputters on in head*

The best craft for human space travel is the one we are already on.

Cheers, Mike.

Hmmm... *note distinct

Hmmm...

*note distinct absence of Einsteinians*

So this is what ruling the world is like when everyone else runs off to Mars on their whoopity golf clap Orion craft is it?

*Glare darkly around thread*

Just when I thought we'd made some REAL progress too.

Well... you had your chance peoples... I'm taking off...

The below pictured "human herding" machinery looks suspiciously like our C-130 cargo aircraft.

We will be filing a patent infringement suit tomorrow.
