RE: Not much exciting

Not much exciting happening. I have bought a set of new infant guessing tubes ( stethoscope, they have a smaller bell to better amplify the higher frequencies that resonate in the smaller body chambers ) delivered today. Nice and red. I'll probably dress it up to look like something cute. The previous one had - like Lemony Snicket - A Series Of Unfortunate Events. While one must respect one's instruments, in this instance it must be laid to rest after long service. It's odd because it feels different rather like changing a good hammer to one with another weight and swing. Tools are like that. You adapt to them.

Some years ago I'd thrown out a digital BP meter upon discovering that their calibration very frequently wanders. The primary mechanism is a metal diaphragm plus lever which is set to correct reading/scale at manufacture. Rather like a barometer. I discovered that metal fatigue typically occurs within a year or so generally causing higher readings, with the error of order that may well be decision changing. Since then I've used the good old 'steam gauge' appearing device, a mercury column in glass. Only a handful of self evident failure modes and most on the operator/handling side. I enjoy and trust the simplicity.

FWIW : in purchasing these things try to establish whether they are being sold as measuring devices ( implicit promise of accuracy ) vs. sold as indicators ( a weaker condition ). A radar gun is a measuring device. A policeman saying "he's going fast" is an indicator. You can rank readings with an indicator and thus it is only useful with differences. With a measuring device you get reproducible and transferable numbers.

Cheers, Mike.

I've had to talk some of my patients out of buying the wrist BP measuring machines. They are notorious bad at give correct reading in older folks due to the atherosclerosis that causes difficulty in compressing the veins.

I've had many stethoscopes over the years (1 give as a present after intern-a HP product good sound but horrible ear pieces, now it sits in the box in the closet).

I ended up changing from the Cardiology III to Master Cardiology (single bell) some years back. Need to replace the bell. I replace the tubing about 2 years ago.

Vicar of Dibley is a good show. Only Fools and Horses is a British Icon, and I am surprised that it hasn't been aired here in North America. I know my husband would love it.

There's a pub in Spain called the black bull that shows them from opening till closing time :)

Oh, and the pool table has a crack in the slate near the bottom right corner pocket.

I have a question for the UK

I have a question for the UK citizens. Why won't the BBC allow BBC-America to show full seasons, (up to present), of Sherlock??? Here, in the US, BBC-A has only shown three episodes of Season 1. Then, the re-aired those same episodes; but, refuse to air the full first season. I saw the three episodes that they did air, and I'M HOOKED!!!!! I want MORE!!!!! I know that I'm not alone on this.

I've no idea as I don't work there :) Contacting them would be my first step. I've done so on a couple of occasions and got a pretty good response.

Howdy Mike, the electrons are currently being put back into my mobile after a flat battery incident, I must've been leaking electrons all over the place. Such a mess.

They do that. As long as you have not been charged with any offences all will be well ...

As for me I'm just running with the usual crowd :

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) NB There are two children in the photo. Can you guess which one has reached middle age ? :-) :-)

Um......middle age? I think not, maestro. Your age is obviously more advanced as you have forgotten that glasses are there to look THRU not OVER. So I'm betting on the shorter one in the picture being the kid.

Phil

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.
