I'm old enough to be a grandfather by now, but I would have to have been a father first, and I never did that.
Instead, I now find myself, for the first time in a long time (actually ever)*, with nobody and nothing depending on me, and I plan to take as much advantage of that as I can afford this summer.
*after having the cat put to sleep on Monday, and paying an extra $131 for the holiday emergency vet visit on top of the regular charge; condolences are unnecessary -- he considered me little more than a food giver, so in return I considered him little more than an expensive mess-maker

Not much exciting happening. I have bought a set of new infant guessing tubes ( stethoscope, they have a smaller bell to better amplify the higher frequencies that resonate in the smaller body chambers ) delivered today. Nice and red. I'll probably dress it up to look like something cute. The previous one had - like Lemony Snicket - A Series Of Unfortunate Events. While one must respect one's instruments, in this instance it must be laid to rest after long service. It's odd because it feels different rather like changing a good hammer to one with another weight and swing. Tools are like that. You adapt to them.
Some years ago I'd thrown out a digital BP meter upon discovering that their calibration very frequently wanders. The primary mechanism is a metal diaphragm plus lever which is set to correct reading/scale at manufacture. Rather like a barometer. I discovered that metal fatigue typically occurs within a year or so generally causing higher readings, with the error of order that may well be decision changing. Since then I've used the good old 'steam gauge' appearing device, a mercury column in glass. Only a handful of self evident failure modes and most on the operator/handling side. I enjoy and trust the simplicity.
FWIW : in purchasing these things try to establish whether they are being sold as measuring devices ( implicit promise of accuracy ) vs. sold as indicators ( a weaker condition ). A radar gun is a measuring device. A policeman saying "he's going fast" is an indicator. You can rank readings with an indicator and thus it is only useful with differences. With a measuring device you get reproducible and transferable numbers.
