Ricky (for when you wake up),

Einstein 4.79 was built (and made the "official" Einstein application) a long time ago (back when BOINC 4.19 was the "official" BOINC client). Since then, BOINC has evolved several times (BOINC 4.45 is now the "official" client and BOINC 5.2.1 is their new Beta version). But Einstein has been much slower to change. And, Einstein 4.79 (still the "official" application) is out of date. This is because the new BOINC's use a newer library of program links which Einstein 4.79 doesn't support. Apparently, the library changes weren't real drastic but were different enough to cause problems (especially with graphics) occasionally. The way I understand it, Einstein 4.79 has always had a problem with ATI graphics cards (even when running with BOINC 4.19) but when BOINC 4.45 was released the other graphics problems also started showing up. This is where the Einstein Beta application comes in. The Beta may stiil have some bugs in it (although I haven't encountered any) but it uses the new BOINC library and it contains fixes for the ATI problem and some other 4.79 bugs). The Einstein software developers aren't working on Einstein 4.79 anymore. It has seen its last revision. But, they are working to improve the Beta and, eventually, it will become the "official" app. That is why I am recommending that you try it. Because, you are also using the newest version of BOINC, you have the opportunity to help test the Beta app on a new platform. Any problems you find and report will get the attention of the software guys and fixes will follow. That won't happen if you stay with 4.79. Besides, if you help to test the Beta, your contribution to the Einstein project will be much more important than just cranking out a few WU's. Think about it.

Stick,

Yes, I noticed where you related the problem with your notebook (not an ATI), and said to myself "Oops, yer a ROOKIE, Mike!"

Thanks, I am now in possession of more knowledge than i was an hour ago. :-)

Michael

Michael,

Since I am usually on the other end of such "Oops's", I have a lot of empathy for your position. I must say though, that being on this end is more fun.

OK, Where do I find this new Beta at? I'm not normally willing to run beta programs on my PC with all the stories i have read about beta programs messing computers. But i'll give it a try.

BTW I did get 3 WU from E@H. Not sure if it was while I was getting ready for bed or what. But this morning I went online and there they were!

Thanks you been a big help. I'll make a note of this for when it happens again.

Ricky,

The beta is here. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Since you will have to wait until all queued WUs have completed, set your Einstein project to "No new work", and bookmark the beta site, for when the work queue is exhausted.

Michael

EDIT: - Please post back here before you install, for a final tip.

Ricky,

I am a little surprised by this, because, when you changed to BOINC 5.2.1, it WAS still in the Beta stage. The new "official" BOINC was just MADE "official" yesterday (or maybe even today). And, it is BOINC 5.2.2. (You should probably upgrade again to it.) I can vouch for the Einstein Beta. It is very stable and contains the fixes I described in my last post. I don't expect that there will be many problems with you using the Einstein Beta. But, I suggested it you because you were using the BOINC Beta and I just assumed you were interested in (and comfortable with) the process of testing new software.

I saw mention of an error

I saw mention of an error message in this thread, most importantly, one not in the Wiki ...

Can I get the log files? Zip up the TXT and OLD (if any) and mail them to ...

I am not getting much work done lately, but, At least I would have the logs for when I can get to them ...

Thanks!

Sorry, don't mean to surprise you but at the time it my unstanding at the time I upgraded (even if it was too soon) all that was need to do was to remove 5.2.1 from the beta status. I didn't know it would later be called 5.2.2. However, I only installed it on one computer to see for myself.

How I'm seeing 5.2.2 so my question is... is it ready to be used by all projects? I had to download P@H on my Toshiba laptop because I still have 4.45 on it and it wouldn't attach on the Dell laptop I had installed the upgrade to. In fact when I installed BOINC on desktop their was no 5.2.1 or 5.2.2 on the list for Windows.

Ricky,

Hopefully, Michael (the BOINC guru here) will respond to this one. Since it is now "official", I just installed 5.2.2 on my Dell a couple of hours ago. And, although it seems to be working OK, I have already reported a "strange" occurance with it on another board (Message boards : Cafe Einstein : New Boinc Windows core client released - 5.2.1).

Paul,

Is that something the contributor has to do? If so, you'll probably have to explain directly to him what you need and how can get it for you. If, however, Stick or I can get the info you need from the result page, post back just what it is - zipping & sending it will be no problem.
