RAC Foundation director Steve Gooding said: "Streams of close-running HGVs could provide financial savings on long-distance journeys, but on our heavily congested motorways - with stop-start traffic and vehicles jostling for position - the benefits are less certain."

The largest benefit would be the salary of the driver that could be saved. That does however not save the environment and is not so good for the economy as the salaries paid are what drive the economy.

If most if not all professional drivers are going to loose their job in the next decade that is going to have a serious impact. The question will be if there is enough other work for such a huge amount of workers.

Michael rides a fixie - a fixed-wheel bicycle - with no front brake. This is illegal. By law, a bike on a public road in the UK must have two brakes.

A fixed-wheel bicycle has a single gear, no freewheel mechanism and dropped handlebars. The rear fixed wheel of a fixie - which a rider can slow using the pedals - counts as a brake.

"I didn't actually know it was against the law until this case," he says.

Ignorance of the law

My car management system,

My car management system, incl sat nav, and mobile phone integrate themselves together. Routes are set up and modified by it's link back to HQ. Is that a mobile sat nav ????

It also informs HQ of service related issues and faults. And also of breakdowns, apparently according to the website news pages, had assistance going to breakdown before driver called them.

Surely you mean "Ignorantia

Surely you mean "Ignorantia juris non excusat" (ignorance of the law excuses not) or "ignorantia legis neminem excusat" ("ignorance of law excuses no one).

You cannot use it as an excuse.

"It would be an entirely different story here if Alliston fell away from Mrs Briggs into an oncoming bus. This was a freak accident.

"People just step out in front and expect us to stop. There needs more education for pedestrians dealing with cyclists. The law needs to look at better cycling infrastructure."

The question also is, how likely is serious injury from such accidents. A bike without real brakes (can you slow down at all going downhill with such a bike?) can be considerably harder to stop while still easily being able to cause serious injury.

If the cyclist would have killed himself by falling in front of heavy traffic that does not take away the fact that he could not stop in time. The solution then still would or should be to make brakes mandatory and enforce this.

The cyclist has been found guilty and will be sentenced in September.

I'm not sure I'm understanding the problems a dual-brake system makes for couriers.  Is there some significant drag on a bike equipped with a front brake? Or does the brake cable interfere with turning?

Really, if you don't want to use the front brake--don't.  Just have it available for emergencies.

The whole point here is

The whole point here is Randy, that a fixed wheel bike without a front brake is illegal on the roads of Britain, the accused said that he didn't know that. Others have tried to justify the "benefits" of riding a fixed wheel bike without a brake despite the fact that a young woman died.

Personally I would not call

Personally I would not call being able to slow down by peddling a brake.

So I'd say that bike does not have any brakes at all.

The wiring of the brakes makes it harder to fit a bag on the steering wheel, other then that there is some additional weight.

The weight might be seen as the biggest disadvantage, why not go for a bike with gears otherwise?

Or the thrill for the additional danger involved in cycling without brakes? That last should never be a reason when you put other people at risk!
