If one looks carefully at the

If one looks carefully at the orientation of the lady's red collar, one can quickly see that she has combed her long hair forward for effect and plonked a pair of sunglasses on.

Holland was designed for cycling and roads introduced to fit in around them. Elsewhere, as in most of the world, the car came first and cycling has to fit in as best it can. You can't compare Holland with another country on a like for like basis. It's like chalk and cheese*. Holland is happily doing its own thing and good luck to them.

The previous London Mayor tried the "Boris Bikes" scheme, but he only gave his name to it. Santander Cycles (formerly Barclays Cycle Hire) is the public bicycle hire scheme in London. The operation of the scheme is contracted by TfL to Serco. Bikes and docking stations are provided by PBSC Urban Solutions. Many fingers in the pie, and it isn't that popular.

I note that Holland also has bendy buses. We tried them in London from 2002-2011 but found them totally unsuitable for our capital city because the increased vehicle size meant they were more likely to block junctions and cause difficulties for other road users. We phased them out in favour of the new Route-Master in 2012.

But the hop on/hop off rear platforms mirroring the previous Route-masters wasn't so popular, as it meant a conductor on board as well as a driver. Introducing cashless buses with oyster cards in  2014 pretty much killed two man operation buses.

Older route-master below.

But apparently no more new Route-Masters are being ordered after next year due to a controversial political decision, and TfL are now apparently looking at all electric battery powered vehicles. That should be fun :-(

*The White Cliffs of Dover are chalk, and Holland has Edam cheese.

(Amsterdam comes from a dam on the river Amster, and Edam comes from a dam on the river E)

Chris, Holland wasn't designed for cycling, it just happens to be flat with no variation in geology.

If Holland was normal and had hills there wouldn't be as many cyclists.

Edam is also known as one of the non-gable cheeses as defined by the saying : "Frankly, my dear, I don't give Edam". :-)

Cheers, Mike.

That is correct as eating too much also means you are gone with the wind :-))  A bit too early for de Havilland aircraft though.

Cheers Chris

This month the largest

This month the largest bicycle parking in the world will open in Utrecht (Holland), giving place to 12.5K bicycles.

So how easy will it be to find your own bike amongst 12,500 others??

If Holland was normal

Well indeed ..... While they are wandering around looking, perhaps they could spare some time to confirm the treaty in 1713 :-)

How easy is it to find your car in a large parking garage? There you also need to remember where you parked it, like floor number and section.

The largest car park in the world is formally recognised with an award as the UK M25. It is easy to find your car as you are always in it.

National Car Parks (NCP) at London Heathrow Airport, have an Android app you can download that uses GPS to give your Smartphone directions to where your car is amongst the 1500 cars parked there.

Here in the US at alot of the airport parking lots the rows have letters and the spaces have numbers and when you get on the bus the driver hands you a ticket to tell you where you car is, they recommend you keep a picture of the ticket on your phone in case you lose the ticket. The bus drives around to your car, or the end of the row if it's really busy and you tell the driver and he writes it, then the bus picks up more people and heads to the airport so you can catch your flight. It's very efficient, convenient and not too expensive in my area.
