What does the term "Extended Partition" mean?

it might have to do with this being an HDD vs SSD. or maybe you deleted the existing partitions but didnt reformat the drive during the OS install.

more importantly, why are you fixated on this? why do you think it's a problem?

Because the HDD has painfully slow response times on a human scale when I try to open the BOINC folder on the desktop.

Because the entire system "goes away" (apparently without rebooting), I am left at the desktop the next time I sign on.

Everything from the Nvidia GUI to the terminals to Boincmgr go away.

why do you think any of those

why do you think any of those things have to do with the OS partition?

should be not a big surprise that a HDD is painfully slow these days. a SATA SSD is cheap, get one. theres no reason to use an HDD as an OS drive anymore.

have you verified that it's not rebooting by checking the "uptime" counter?

To simply open a file folder should NOT take more than 30 seconds.

Just for grins I have switched the Epyc data cable from "0" to "1" and have started up U@H.

The BOINC folder on the desktop opened promptly.

Installed the GPU

Installed the GPU driver/utilities.  Started e@h on one GPU.  Using "stock" application.

Returning you to my private grumbling thread.  :)

FYI - I thought this

FYI - I thought this interesting for NVIDIA users, a webpage of all the different variations of NVIDIA GPU drivers for the different Linux versions.

And if you are running Ubuntu it has some for them too :)

Sometimes I can be a true

Sometimes I can be a true idiot.  I purchased an XFX MERC 319 RX 6800 XT GPU without checking the physical dimensions of the card.  Unfortunately, the card is too big to fit in any of my Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosures.  This means that I cannot connect the card to any of my (Intel) Macs.  I am too lazy to sell the card and I am way too frugal to just put it on a shelf.

So, could any of you please suggest a cheap, used Linux box that would accommodate this card and would serve as a reasonable E@H cruncher and as a platform for me to learn how to use Linux?  If at all possible, I would prefer a PnP solution.  Please keep in mind that my non-Mac computing experience in the last three decades is VERY limited.  If I needed to, I could probably swap a power supply in order to accommodate the energy demands of the 6800 XT.  (I have been upgrading my Akitio Node eGPU enclosures to 750W power supplies.)

TIA for any help that you can provide!

AMD cpu's are cheaper but Intel ones can do better without the hyper-threading on projects like PrimeGrid, yes some AMD cpu's do great at PG but in general Intel cpu's do the tasks a bit faster. If you are just staying here at Einstein an I5 or I7 can be gotten pretty cheap and you can get a used AMD 5800X cpu pn the secondary market for $250. The cpu and motherboard you buy will determine the type of memory you need but the DDR3 and DDR4 stuff is coming down in price, NO they are not interchangeable. The motherboard you buy must be compatible with the cpu you buy as you can NOT put an AMD cpu on a board designed for an Intel cpu, the reverse is also true!!

Lots of places will sell you a combination cpu and motherboard so look at those and decide if the board fits what you want both now and for future expansion, ie only having 2 memory slots mean you have to buy 2 chips to do a major upgrade as opposed to only using 2 memory slots of a 4 slot board now and then buying 2 more memory sticks later on. They make external dvd drives so you don't need an internal one of those either unless you just want one, you can also install Linux from a usb stick if you want too.

You are not alone!! I have an older Intel cpu I bought a motherboard off of Ebay for, the old one was a Dell and it was becoming flaky so I bought the new board. $59US, and went to install it in the case and realized it didn't come with a cpu cooler and the one I had won't fit!! I'm currently working on trying to see if the self contained water cooling setup my son gave me will work or not, if not I'm not sure what I will do yet.

If it is the same LGA # it is usually reasonable to assume the CPU cooler will have the holes in the same places. Both Dell and HP have been known to use non-standard PSU setups (and sometimes even plugs).  This is the first time I have thought about a Dell using a non-standard CPU cooler for a particular LGA. (Except for servers  which is a whole different issue).

Hmmmm....
