The reason I say that in my signature is because Microsoft will not upgrade my computers that had that had the Ryzen 7 1700 (8 core 16 threads) to Windows 11 - not acceptable (they don't say WHY). So I changed some CPUs around for the Windows machines, now they have Ryzen 3 3200Gs (4 core 4 threads) in them and Microsoft sez that's acceptable. The Ryzen 7 1700s are in the Linux machines running this project. So much the better ...

Is there a way to run my CPU

Is there a way to run my CPU fan(s) faster?  I have a Noctua NH-D15 installed on a 3950x CPU.  It is running "hot" and it seems like if I could throttle up my CPU fans I could get it to run some cooler.

I understand that under-volting the CPU can make it run cooler.  I am working on that (its an experiment in progress).

The target system is running Ubuntu 20

Assuming you have plugged into a motherboard fan header it is as simple as toggling the fan header it is connected to to Disabled in the Monitor section >> Chassis Fan Control in the BIOS.

That removes any temp-speed control from the header and lets it put out constant 12V so the fan always runs at max speed.  The NH-D15 is inaudible at full speed so noise is not a concern.

So if I wasn't before I am getting the maximum speed now.

Still running 80C+ on the CPU.  I guess the only other choice(s) are stop Over Clocking or a liquid CPU cooler.

You still could achieve more

You still could achieve more temp reduction by reducing your cpu voltage. 1.35V under BOINC load is still pretty high for just 4-4.2Ghz on a 3950X.

Another trick that hails back to the early AMD cpu days is to put a 40mm fan on the backside of the cpu socket blowing on the underside of the cpu.  You mount it with double-sided foam tape so that it stands 1/2 - 3/4" proud of the socket on its foam legs.  That reduces the cpu temp by 3-4° C. typically.  I have one on all my Ryzen cpus and boards connected to CPU_Opt header.  Get a good ball bearing model and not the cheap sleeved bearing types so that it lasts.  The Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX is my preferred model.

If and when you ever receive your AIO unit, it still might only equal your NH-D15 unit or slightly better being only a 280mm unit. That Noctua cooler is pretty much the king of air cooling.  Only solutions using much faster fans do any better along with incurring a higher noise penalty.

But as harped on repeatedly, temps respond exponentially to reduced/increased voltages.  So if you are still unhappy with the temps, either reduce the voltages or reduce the clocks.

But 85° C. is not something to be worried about really.  The max allowed by AMD is 95° C. before the protection mechanism starts ramping clocks down.

I am still working on trying to get the voltage lower. Setting the voltage at 1.31 volts causes it to run at about 1.28-1.29 volts which causes a lockup after a while.  3 times so far. The last time I think I had the LLC turned all the way "up".

And I am still working on getting the GHz higher.

To install a fan under the CPU socket I would have to change the setup.  Right now it is sitting in the open on a sheet of Lucite that was specifically arranged to have the holes right where an ATX motherboard needs them.  My #2 Mining frame doesn't have a hole below the MB at all.  I might have to install it in my server case to get enough clearance or buy another open bottom mining frame to put in that below the MB cooling fan.

So will play with the rig I have (w/wo the Liquid cooling option) and see how far I can push it.  I can always fall back to the x570 MB to get more granular control.  Then I don't have to spend any more money.

I want to push the 3950x to a higher level of production but don't want to make it unreliable.  Right now it is co-existing with an Rtx 3080 which makes me tempted to not put the 3080 back in my top-performing rig :(

If it is not simple adding the rear socket fan, then don't bother.  As I said it only reduces the cpu temp a few degrees.  Not like 20 or something.

What you have never told me is what the set VID voltage is in the BIOS and what does it sag to under BOINC load.

I still have not seen any indication yet that you have LLC working.  No matter the values you choose in the BIOS.

I'd like you to set a working value of say 1.35V in the BIOS under LLC1 and then report the under load voltage.

Then change the LLC to 9 or whatever and then report the voltage.

If it locks up at 1.28V under load then increase the VID set voltage so that the under load voltage ends up at 1.30V.

If it still locks up, then increase the set VID voltage to end up at 1.31V under load.

What is your LLC level and set VID voltage that makes you end up at 1.28V and ends up crashing.

When does it crash?  Under load? or when you remove BOINC load?  One indication is not enough LLC and the other is too much LLC.

The whole point of LLC is to attain a stable working voltage that does not sag very much from the set VID and still does not spike too high when the load is removed.

You might want to Google LLC and read the many fine articles written explaining what it is,  what it does, and how to set the value in the BIOS.  Almost every tech website has done an article or primer.

Last two morning I have

Last two morning I have gotten up to my Epyc Ubuntu system showing an "authentication error" on the desktop screen.

This shows up as soon as I wake up the desktop.

I googled the error and got no clear idea of how to fix it.  Any ideas?
