Regarding power consumption:

Regarding power consumption: the calculation is much easier for us in Germany. During the cold days heating is not usually done via electricity. It's gas or something - certainly much cheaper. So reduced heating costs are a factor, but a small one.

And in summer: we don't usually have AC's. Some larger corporations, supermarkets etc. use them, but not in private homes. So actually I find it odd that someone would run a PC farm within the house and then use electricity to get the heat out of the house. It doesn't seem right to me. But then at temperatures above ~28°C I can't think properly any more.. so living in your region without AC would probably s*ck for me :p

I think Max means that while

I think Max means that while the current allocation is 50:50, we need less to cope with present Aricebo production rate. As discussed earlier, when we catch up to real-time early next year that'll need a rethink ( if all relevant matters being as they are now ).

My 'only 1000 modest' video cards comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek as GPU based computing ( massively parallel etc ) isn't a generic solution for any task.

I think it would be terrific for E@H to serve the wider community of pulsar hunters. The new pulsar discovery has validated the 'citizen scientist' model in the best way possible. When I initially joined, I perceived the long term aspect and accepted that my specific computing input may well only form a background role. But I'll confess to now hankering to catch a magic spike in the data. Throttle up !! :-)

Cheers, Mike.

No, i just miss info about

No, i just miss info about switching from 70/30 to 50/50. Thanks for update, so ~30 TFLOPS is corrent number.

P.S.
Little oftopic.
As yet it is sometimes difficult to understand a person with a different native language. Reading the post of Mike came across an unfamiliar word to me (terrific), as is usual in such cases, open the dictionary. But was in some disarray when he gave me two completely opposite options to translation.
One "bad" (synonyms is terrible, awful, horror etc.), another "good" (synonyms is excellent, fine, great etc.).
Only after reading all post completely, i can understand exactly what he means. If I got only one first sentence, I would not know how to translate it! (rather likely I would have translated as that person is very unhappy with this prospect) :) LOL

Yeah - pleasantly outstanding and NOT full of terror. LOL. You are right, if you didn't grow up speaking English it makes poor sense. :-) :-)

Cheers, Mike.

Terrify or terrifying is a negative emotion, whereas terrific opposes that. All the horror variants are negative.

For a laugh, look up flammable or inflammable! Hint : don't smoke near either! :-)

yes and for those of us that grew up with a/c in almost every house we have ever been in it is strange that alot of places just don't have it! I think it is the fairly low amount of really hot and humid days you have compared to alot of the US. Here in the Southern US it can get hot and humid in June and not get cool and comfy again until September or even October, that is ALOT of time spent sweating if you even THINK of just moving! So exhausting or replacing the hot air is a normal thing so when the pc's add more hot air the a/c just has to work a little longer, they don't work harder, to maintain the temp we want. Now in New Hampshire or Maine they do not even have a/c in most homes because the hot and humid weather is only around for 2 weeks to a month and it is not worth the expense of building it into a home. But when it gets to be 90F and 90% humidity nothing works to cool you off like a/c!

I have lived in many parts of the World, my dad was in the service, and have always been thankful that English is my main language. Watching others try to learn it can be painful at times! As hard as it is though alot of the World seems to use it as one of their many 'other' languages they speak, which in itself is also amazing!!! Americans speak English and something else if they have to or grew up with it, alot of the rest of the World seems to learn more than one language just because!

But you have produced the important part of it and as you cite a vendor in Germany you should love extra heat compared to my marginal dislike of it. Climate here is 6 months full time A/C with maybe one month on either side in the "don't care" category. Back in DC I would have had two months on either side as "don't care" months so the actual months it mattered would be problematic.

To summarize, forget power consumption. It is too hard for us mere mortals.

I live in Northern Va, just South of Dale City/Woodbridge and the cost of the a/c is not cheap! I have 9 gpu's crunching right now and my electric bill is around $500.00 per month, I have a 2 story, not counting the basement, Colonial style home that is all electric, but have no kids at home, just the wife and I. Gpu's are NOT cheap to run and the heat generated is a consideration!! I have most of my gpu's in my basement and being a basement the airfow is HORRIBLE but my basement is right now in the low 80's while it is in the 70's most days outside right now, so about a 10F degree increase and that is with the a/c on!! Now when it is in 90's outside my basement did go up into the mid to upper 80's but the a/c kept it below 90 down there, that and a few floor fans blowing the air around. As I said it is a basement so the cooling options are poor at best.

I am not saying A/C is cheap. I am only saying that heat is a good thing in winter. Perhaps you should move the computer upstairs to the living spaces in winter to get back some of the extra cost in summer. I agree this is not simple such as when heating is done by natural gas or oil it is not possible to recover the dollar value as the cost per BTU is so much different. I simply throw it out as another consideration.

Trust me, it would matter a lot. The outside temp plus the fact that the sun is so high in the sky compared to Germany causes insolation to be a major factor. It is like a greenhouse. Contrary to popular belief they do not work by trapping CO2 but rather by trapping the heated air. So do people houses. And it is the very rare house here in Florida that is actually designed for tropical living. They do not have large windows on opposite sides with unobstructed path to let breezes expel the heated air. Bottom line is the inside is at least 5C higher than outside by midday and be even higher.
