Actually, looking at the radio telescope from above would basically look very similar to this symbol. It is not moving with the sky but is precessing eastward at the same rate the Earth moves which means it represents a location on the Earth. I correlated the time and location in the sky with a astronomy planetarium program and determined that it is seems to be centered over a point in the Arabian Peninsula. A real off the wall wild guess is that it could have something to do with the Muslim celebration of Ramadan which is going on from early August to early September. Don't know why it would be in the StarSphere. It will be interesting to see how long it appears in the StarSphere.

Well i have no idea what it is, but here it is again this afternoon !
From the position I can calculate, it is centered somewhere in the Middle East in the general area of Arabia or the Red Sea, possibly eastern Egypt. That is the location that corresponds to the zenith position (directly overhead) of the declination, R.A., and time of the symbol.

But isn't that the position of the search marker, as said in the "Screensaver description" tab in the home page?

I also have this white marker, which looks much like a parabolic dish as seen head on, appear whenever I am crunching Arecibo binary pulsar data. There also appears a grey colored LIGO type marker during this, while at the same time, the orange "gun site" type reticule, which indicates where the Arecibo dish is being pointed, is also being displayed.
I have noticed as well, a white LIGO type marker when crunching Global Correlation data, in addition to the normal blue, green, and red markers.
These unknown markers don't appear only sometimes. They are present all the time on the screen saver's map, of couse depending on the type of data being worked on.
It would seem to me, that not all the information about different markers to be seen was addressed to begin with or perhaps new markers were added, but no one updated the screen saver description page with their meanings.
I wish someone who has direct affiliation with the project, would post an actual explanation of these unknown markers. Until then, they remain just another mystery of the universe to speculate about. :-)

The orange "gun site" (target) = the point in the sky where Arecibo pointed at the moment of recording (may be months/years ago) and your computer analyses now this data.
The Arecibo grey dish symbol = the point in the sky where Arecibo points now (at the moment you look at the graphics).
( I see these symbols appearing all the time on the graphic (not blinking or disappearing).
What is your GPU/driver version?

Greetings all,
Well! Here's an answer to one, perhaps the most important "mystery symbol" item question, for me anyway, that makes some common sense. Thanks very much BilBg!
{HA! I have been looking in the wrong direction half of the time due to this!}
Someone who can, should update / upgrade the screen saver information page with this information. Then perhaps, and IF the page is read (and understood), this repeated question will cease. ;-)
The other white and gray colored "LIGO type" symbols I see are only shown on the map, depending on which type of data is being crunched and then displayed in turn on the screen saver. A white one on the Global Correlation maps and a grey one on the Binary Pulsar maps.
My statement of the symbols being observed "all the time", was meant to imply the consistency of their continued appearance on the type of data map being displayed, not on both at the same time, all the time.
Sorry for the miscommunication. :-(
BTW, If you scroll down to Tom Richardson's posting here and look at his "screenie" of the Binary Pulsar map, you can observe the mystery grey colored, "L" shaped, LIGO type marker displayed in the very upper right quadrant at approximately 45 degrees from 0 deg. of circumference, and almost right next to the small red (rather dark red as well) GEO symbol.
I am not the only crazy person! YEA!!!!! :-)
I haven't installed an add in graphics card, so it's still running the standard "Realtec" which came built in. It's driver programing version is the latest available update made for it. I don't have any problems with any other displays of any type from anywhere, so I highly doubt that any of these two items are being a possible problem source factor in displaying phantom symbols or markers on the maps.
Anyway. . . . One "mystery symbol" down, and two to go. :-)

No, they are separate markers on the screensaver. If you notice the image that was posted, the search marker appears to be rotating off the left edge.

Guys, watch the lines on the gray disk. It is a clock and the lines are the hands. They move as the globe moves showing what time it is on the globe.
