I've been using SuSE for years, after Unifix (another German distro), Corel and Slackware. I like its automatic upgrade features and it never crashes. My Linux 32-bit kernel is pae and I am using a 5 GB RAM. I could reach 8 GB on my SUN M20 workstation but I see BOINC projects don't use much RAM, most of it is used as a disk cache.

I just picked up another WD external drive from Costco today. Price dropped too since the last one I bought 2 months ago. I'm jumping ship from Fedora to aptosid as I've gotten tired of Fedora not liking my hardware. Interestingly the aptosid (based on Debian Sid) LiveCD booted right to the desktop, unlike Kubuntu which gave me the same problems as Fedora. Learning the Debian way is going to be a pain after doing things the Red Hat way for so long. Are there any tips for sudo or apt-get?
I'm using Ubuntu - 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx to be exact. Is that the same as Kubuntu? Painless so far ( especially since it's the only one I've got the screensaver framework to work reliably on ). What is absolutely magic is the Ubuntu Software Centre ( provided by Ubuntu in the sense of being validated etc by them ) - select an application, wait for download and install, then use. No barfing. There is a stunning range of choice. Need a tool and you're on the go? Browse around and in no time your back into it. :-)

The only problem I had with SuSE is that is of VirtualBox not starting after 3.2.6. Both 3.2.8 and 3.2.10 give me an error in VBoxDD.so undefined symbol, but I don't know if this is a SuSE error or a VirtualBox error after SUN has been acquired by Oracle.

Ubuntu uses Gnome as the desktop and Kubuntu uses KDE. I was hoping to get the new distro installed today, but I've been a bit under the weather and had to write a half dozen tests to give next week.
I've had good luck with Fedora up until recently. I'm sure I could get it to work, but honestly I've been too lazy. And getting the Debian perspective will be good for me.
Well, I thought that I was good-to-go with my new hard drive in the Quad-quad Opteron machine. Turns out though, that switching from Xubuntu to Arch is causing a bit of difficulty.
Ever since I installed Arch, I've been getting lots of Computation Errors and invalid results. A search of the forums revealed what I hope is the solution.
The problem results from "Signal 8" errors, which apparently is quite common. My forum search found the solution in a post that was made only seven days ago.
According to the post, having the wrong PREEMPT setting for the kernel will cause Signal 8 failures. So, I've just started compiling a new kernel, with the correct PREEMPT setting, on the Quad-quad. It should be through in about an hour, and hopefully that will fix the problem. If it doesn't, I guess I'll just have to switch to some other Linux distro.
Well, the PREEMPT setting problem is easier to fix than I thought. What I hadn't noticed before is that a default installation of Arch has two installed kernels. One is a server kernel, which has the PREEMPT setting set correctly for Einstein. So, all I needed to do was to edit the GRUB configuration to use that kernel, instead of the regular desktop kernel.
It just took longer than I wanted to get to it, due to the calico feline who wanted to spend time in my lap.
And it was downright WARM at my place yesterday here in Northern Virginia! It got up to the mid 70's and is supposed to be even warmer today, tomorrow and Wednesday! I will be glad when it gets and STAYS back into the 50's and 60's!!
