As for the two way circulation, plus collisions, what a job! Similar to LIGO, it can be hard to appreciate the degree of precision, and the number of correct preconditions, required to achieve this.

There's also a good article on quench protection, which includes highly radiation hardened sensors to pick up very, very tiny deviations from the superconducting state ( one nano ohm !! ). The magnet currents are then dumped into 'special' resistors. 'Special' is a definite understatement as the energy to quench, per sector, is equivalent to the kinetic energy of a cruising passenger jet! They have also put in UPS's ..... :-)

( edit ) In a given magnet circuit : up to ~ 8000 amps needs to quench in under one second. Several resistors are used to quench, at least three 50kg lumps of copper ( of 50cm diameter in cross-section ) in series, with each of these soaking up ~ 2 GigaJoules !! During which time a resistor heats up by ~ 100 degrees Kelvin !! Now that'll quickly boil the kettle. It's worthy to compare this with a typical lightning strike of over 20K amps that also lasts about the same time. Thus LHC has to quench lightning !!

It looks like the LHC is bound to problems related to connecting cables with a soldering iron. See this "Nature" article which points to a paper written by one of the builders of LHC: Soldering the LHC
Maybe the nuclear and subnuclear physicists of CERN have underestimated a problem in soldering cables, which should have been done with a proper solder alloy.
