Alternatively you can use the

Alternatively you can use the package manager. It's been forever and a day (OK, a year since I used *buntu), but it is in the repositories.

This will set up BOINC to run under its own user account.

Or (don't you just love Linux) you can follow the directions here, which are the ones I used when I started out.

Welcome to Linux, as a Windows guy I am in exactly the same boat!!
Here is a link to how I did it and it works!
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=3936

Just remember one thing, if you click the x to close the box like in Windows, the program actually stops running!! You MUST click the minimize button to not keep the box on the scree AND keep Boinc running. Ubuntu is the easiest Linux I have found, and it is STILL hard for me. You can also go here http://malariacontrol.net/forum_thread.php?id=642 to see a brief history of my experiences, and lots of helpful ideas, of my own trials and tribulations with Linux. I still have 2 pc's running Ubuntu, both are doing fine!!

Use the package manager if

Use the package manager if you want to make it easy, it will install boinc as a daemon, no further configuration needed. All you need to do is copy and paste this into konsole:

sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager

I did this, but I got BOINC 6.2.1... which isn't even a stable version and which didn't work too well.

I did the install with the package manager and it seems to work but it is not the latest version and I get messages about getting the later version so I shall now persue that.

Unstable packages in *ubuntu, what else is new? =)
I had 6.2.14 from Debians testing/unstable release for quite a while now, never gave me trouble. You can safely install it on *buntu as well.

Client
64bit: http://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/boinc-client/download
32bit: http://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/boinc-client/download

Manager
64bit: http://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/boinc-manager/download
32bit: http://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/boinc-manager/download

You can also try Debians Experimental version, 6.2.18:
http://packages.debian.org/experimental/boinc-client

Installation:
sudo dpkg -i

Start/stop/restart boinc on debian-based linux:
sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client restart (or start/stop)

I found that if I did the updates it did that automatically.

"did the updates"..?....from Boinc or in kubuntu package system?
