EDIT: From what I read here, it seems that the poor performance of the VS 2005 compiler compared to VS 2003 in this particular case (generating code full of store-forwarding-stalls) might be related to a bug acknowledged by Microsoft and fixed only in Visual Studio 2008.

Is this something that could be build using the express (free to download) edition of VC08? It's cut down from the standard/pro/etc editions to be more suited for the casual user, so it might not have everything you need, but if you have the time there's no harm in trying.
Loaded 4.26 on a dual PIII Xeon running 700/100/2048 processors, 2GB memory, and Win2k Pro. It was doing about 2% per hour with the old science app. So far one WU is running at about 2.25-2.5% per hour and the second one is around 3% per hour. They have only been running for a little over three hour as I write, but it looks good so far.

In theory (from disassembly, profiling and early extrapolation of runtime) , this version should be about 15...20% faster than the previous one (for workunits around the minimum runtime within a frequency range).
Well, my result finished in 33,332.81 seconds, which was within 1% of my initial estimate of 33,000 seconds... It definitely seems markedly faster. I need to attend to some Cosmology tasks, but I should be able to get some more tasks from here to run...

While I haven't looked at some of the timings from 4.27 (Linux), I'm taking a "gut feeling" guess that if 4.27 didn't have any appreciable performance increase, it made a significant dent in, if not completely eliminated, the performance gap between Linux and Windows on the same hardware.
So, Astro, feel free to get this on your 6000+ soon... ;-)
First result done 80 % with 4.26 is done. Time goes down from 33000 seconds to 28000 seconds. But waiting still for validation partner. Seems that this new app works fine and very fast. Thanks a lot Bernd.
Man....I feel like a "ping pong" ball. One day Bernd says "hey look, I got a new linux app", so I reboot to linux and load up. Then later he says "hey look, I got a new Windows app", so today, I reboot to windows and Load Up. I barely managed to run my other projects dry on linux, so today will be running them dry on windows. Well...hopefully by the end of the day, all I'll have remaining are einstein wus, then some stuff can happen. I only have a 1.5 day cache so it should take toooooo long, and some of that was already einstein. Of course, to add to the ping pong ball feeling. When I first came back (several days ago) I'd set the other projects to NNW, and started to run them dry. Only to hear/feel that I wouldn't be able to collect much data on the current apps, So I reloaded up on the other projects. Then that's when these new apps came out, so I switched back to NNW on the other projects.

Thanks! No, it diddn't work for VS2003, so I don't think it will work with 2008. There are libraries and tools missing.
