A new MacOS PPC App is available from our Beta Test page.

This App is part of a new generation of Apps that follow our attempts to track down and fix the remaining problems of the new software we're using since S5R2. It has the same codebase as the 4.33 Windows App, thus basically the same features.

For the "SIN/COS LUT" it uses a variant using floor(), which should be the fastest on PowerPC CPUs. This App should be significantly faster that the previous Beta, and might even be faster than the current official one.

Plese test and report.

MacOS PPC S5R2 App 4.34 available for Beta Test

Only a couple of hours in but looking good so far on a G5. Where the previous beta was roughly twenty per cent slower than the stock app, this version seems twenty per cent faster than the stock app. Now we're going the right way! Thanks Bernd.

I second the thanks for an

I second the thanks for an app to supercede 4.29. My 1.83 Ghz G5 needs all the help it can get in the competition against these multicore speed demons. Actually, there is no competition: my G5 doesn't stand a chance.

It would be particularly nice

It would be particularly nice if someone could test this on a G3. We're getting some "Illegal Instruction" errors from the current official App on G3.

Okay Bernd,

Since you asked, I've just installed this on my little G3-based iMac. It's only a 400-Megahertz job, so just don't expect any quick results. ;)

By the way, there's a slight error with the instructions on the beta page. Owner and group should be set to "boinc_master" and "boinc_project", respectively.

Than you! If there really is an instruction in the code that is illegal on the G3 it should show up rather soon.

Thanks. I updated the instructions.

My 1st result with 4.34 just

My 1st result with 4.34 just completed (validation = initial). So far it says 448 credits in 184234 CPU sec. Prior apps did 348 credits in about that same time (189000). I had only two other 448 credit WUs on my G5 and they took in the 240,000 CPU sec range.

My preliminary results show a nice speed up !!!! :).

The beta app has gone over 24 hours now with its first workunit. Everything looks good so far, with no error messages at all. (But then, I have to confess, I never had any problems with the official app on this machine, either.)

I have had 2 WU's complete

I have had 2 WU's complete with valid results with 4.34. So far so good with my iMac G5 1.83Ghz.

Missouri had a back to school sales tax holiday so I splurged and bought another mac mini that I am going to dedicate as another Einstein cruncher. I just bought the cheapest model (1.66Ghz core duo with 512mb ram). It will be interesting to see how it goes up against my other mini which is 1.83Ghz and 1Gb ram. First I have to do the software update which may take the rest of the night.

It took a while, but my little G3 iMac has successfully completed a work unit with the beta app.
