Hope you have better luck than I have with the memory up grade Bikeman. Seems strange, but, PC133r is more expensive than PC1600r or 2100r at present.
that's because the PC133 ram you're buying now was manufactured 6 years ago, so the base price is what is cost 6 years ago, not what it costs to manufacture the equivalent in more modern types.
I have 2 128 MB PC133 DIMM and a 64 MB DIMM on my old box. I was presented by a friend with a 128 MB DIMM and wanted to swap the 64 MB with the 128 MB, but I could not insert it in the slot after shutting down. Then I inspected the DIMM and found a sign indicating it is a PC266. One never stops learning something.

I've been paying about $20 a GB for PC1600r in 512MB modules and $25 for a GB of PC133r in 512's. Picked up 2GB, 4 512's, of PC133r for $22 tonight. It should be here by the first part of next week.
It just seems strange that the 133r would still be higher than either the 1600r or 2100r. It's still cheap compared to what memory used to be. Remember those 1MB modules when they sold for $40-45+ each?
The cheapest way to buy PC133 registered RAM is to buy the whole server at a traditional auction. Auction houses often group several old, heavy, dirty, battered looking servers on a single pallet and sell them all as a single, ill-described, bulk lot. You need to do some homework and remove a cover or three to see what's inside before the auction starts. Most people can't be bothered doing that and just assume that anything of value will already have been removed. That tends to be the case with SCSI disks and caddies but not so much with RAM and CPUs. I have acquired quite a stock of PC133 registered RAM this way.
I bought a pallet of 5 old HP Netservers recently for $5 and ended up with around 2.5gigs of RAM in both 512MB and 256MB sticks as well as 2x1G, 2x933, 1x866 and 2x733 slot 1 coppermine cpus. I actually put the smallest case into production and put the carcasses of the others into a scrap metal bin after removing things like hot swap PSUs and fans, VRMs and mobos, etc. With the right tools they strip down surprisingly quickly :).
@Bikeman - out of interest, what sort of price do you expect to have to pay for your RAM in Germany? I was interested to see Jim's $25/GB figure for USA. In Australia, on ebay, people seem to be asking around $60-$80/GB but I suspect that actual sales might be lower than that - maybe around $40-$50/GB. It would also depend on the size of each stick with a premium for larger capacity sticks.

Hi!
I got mine the traditional way at ebay, which is the least time consuming for me. So I will get a single 1GB module for 21 EUR by tomorrow. I think this was a bit on the cheap side, usually they sell for around 35 EUR over here, but the seller tried to dump 16 1GB modules in a single multi-auction and there just wasn't enough demand at that particular time to drive the price up. :-)

You reckon?? :).
My experience with ebay is that you can waste a heck of a lot of time just finding the items you want at a fair price. And then just when you think you've got it somebody comes along at the death and knocks you out with a crazy bid :). Give me the traditional auction any day. You have hundreds of lots to choose from and you can see exactly what your opponents are doing :). And it's all over in a couple of hours. My two favourite auction houses are each just 10 minutes drive from my office :).

That sounds like a pretty good deal for a 1GB stick. That's equivalent to about $AUD35. You have the advantage of much bigger volumes in Europe. In this part of the world you just don't see 1 x 1GB sticks all that often, let alone 16 at a time. Congratulations on your excellent purchase.
I have been trying to find an an AMD Athlon processor A1400AMS3B but with no luck. Plenty of the C versions around, not the B.
Anyone got one for sale or know of a source?
Thanks
Chris S.
I saw one on ebay USA :-) .... Beware, this one must have a not so good performance / Watts ratio. It will dissipate more than 70 Watts under full load, IIRC

Yup, and sometimes when I've got time I really do this crazy bidding in the last second stuff etc... but for this one I entered my max limit (28 EUR) and went away for an after-work pub meeting. When I came back I had a new 1GB module :-). Currently I'm working 10 h x 6 days (the maximum allowed officially according to German labour laws) and I would find it difficult to attend a traditional auction, although that might be fun. Will try it in less busy times.
Pretty much the same for me. My max away from the house is about 2 hrs at a time, sick wife and can't leave her unattended. After she goes into the nursing home maybe I can do some looking around and see if there are any in the area. Sounds like fun and a good source of cheap parts!
@ chris s
There are several I can think of, but they are all US, not sure if they ship out of country. I'll check and send you a message if you want?

Yes please Jim. Ebay is nogood, would be prepared to consider postage from the states.
@Bikeman, it will be used to upgrade an 850, I'll live with the heat!
Thanks,
Chris
