edit: I stand corrected.. These guys seem very relevant:-)

edit: Levity aside: I have been following the Haitian earthquake made contributions to the red cross and doctors without borders. if anybody feels a need and are comfortable with it, make a donation they need the money. Check your own countries charitable organizations least you could get a tax break..

Done! Very pleased to return the favour as DownUnda received tremendous charity after the fires last year. :-)

Happy to have lost actually. Got another minute now? Hope we make good use of it ..... :-)

Cheers, Mike.

For a change of pace, or a

For a change of pace, or a good laugh check this out.

Personally I agree with his 'management' of the story too. The death toll we have is quite un-necessary - I've personally picked up the pieces way too often. He has indirectly highlighted the weakness of motoring technology really, in that we have high performance cars which often can't be suitably matched by the driver in many circumstances. Our nervous systems just haven't evolved with the responsiveness to the short reflex timelines at much above, say, fifteen km/h.

In a vast country like DownUnda we really need to beef-up/support/accept/emphasise bulk land transport modes over long distances ie. trains. Personally I rarely drive for more than about 90 minutes without a break. But that's because of personal paranoia -> bred as a medico with considerable direct trauma treatment experience. But the majority of the motoring public cannot conceive of what I ( and thus emergency services generally ) would know - and this is why the police are so frustrated with driver attitudes. I've yet to meet a road trauma victim who expected it. :-(

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) I just have to throw one quote from the online comments on this article :

Quote:
... speed does not kill. It never did. Stopping too fast kills....

I'm almost ashamed to be an Aussie with that brilliant piece of physics. Reminds me of evidence given under oath by a driver - "check out the length of my skid marks, can't you see how hard I tried to stop?!"

Mr. Lay sounds very respectable. It seems some commenters are directing their anger towards him for just doing the job he was assigned to do by the politicians (Get the road toll down). Cameras can be very intrusive and (no pun intended) 'Black & White'.

I have been following a social network for a while now called reddit. News thats available is commented on. I find this group intelligent and fun to read.

Just reading this group makes me think we are going in the right direction. "Opinions Abound' and you can be insulted most intelligently. The comments are such a fun read.

This post is about a paper published the International Journal of Biological Sciences (never heard of it)
I use this as example that is close to my heart because it shows the potential on how science creditability is eroding. People can use (I don't know) take data in science journals get up on their soap box, twist it to fit their beliefs or on the other side of the coin people writing in obscure science journals to get published, then promote their articles, another example corporations using ghost writers to publish papers in science journals to promote their agenda (Alas... that is the battle for ideas and it has not changed since Galileo).

I think the internet changes the game. and science has to evolve with it and get its message out properly. Society these days are such short term thinkers. I do not think the peer review process is going to last in its current state for hot button issues.

A good place to start is with the media

Science or (Yikes! The Law) has to take them to Task

Hmm. Each Scientific Periodical is required to create a fund to defend its articles against misrepresentation (Just Like Libel Laws)

Edit: Forget it that won't work
