snipThey are a family run business and so the public has very little control on investing in the company based on its social responsibilty index.
So like you said it is up to the family shopper.

I believe Wal-mart made this annoucement to attract a more upscale customer so thay can improve their bottom line and continue growing. It won't work unless they deliver on the products that they advertise. They will stop growing and shrink like Kmart or go extinct.snip

I would think that a driving force behind Wal-mart's actions and plans would be the fiscal responsibility to its shareholders. It is a public company that offers stock. I'm not sure how much the "family run business" aspect works into that.

One of the articles I came across: Attention, Wal-Mart Shoppers

I may be wrong but I think Wallmart is a not public traded company. It is incorporated but all shares are owned by the Walton Family.

Fiscal responsibility.is the driving force by any company. But as the article stated Walmart is losing the quality battle to companies like Target. I think that's why they started offering organic produce (to improve the quality). I quess their profit margins were to lean from it. So walmart is caught between a rock and hard place. Either improve quality with a reduced profit margin., Or begin to shrink as other companies offer higher quality goods for the same price will grow.

Round and round the consumer goes, and where it stops, no one knows :) I think that as long as there is a 'sucker born every minute', economics will provide the lawful means to keep picking pockets... I don't think I've ever felt like a bigger sucker, but I'd still rather spend my free time marveling at science than shopping around, any day...

As get older I find I am thinking of my stomach alot and what I put into it.
I do not consider myself an extreme consumer ( I am still using a 400 mhz iMac I purchaced 7 years ago):)

All I what is simple nutritious food that's not going to kill me. and a convenient place to get it at a reasonable price. I would be very happy :-)

It's possible right now, to put together a medical robot that would enable doctors to once again perform house calls.

...and perform surgery!
NASA to test portable robot surgeon
Uses mentioned in the article include treating wounded soldiers on a battlefield, performing complicated surgery on patients in remote areas of the developing world and to help sick astronauts in space. One quick point not mentioned: who knows if the next natural disaster will be meteorological or geological, or man-made in nature? But it sure would be beneficial to have one of the robotic surgeons in each home, before the disaster hits. I realize that's a lot of robots, but it didn't take long to make that many television sets... :)

I could see this being used in extremely remote locations for noninvasive surgery where cumbersome diagnostics tools such as CT scanners and MRI scanners are not required to make proper diagnosis. The most complex is probably like a emergency appendectomy.

This technology would be ideal in servicing medicial clincs in remote locations, where there is some diagnostic facilities. These could operated by a highly traned paramedic or nurse practitioner; and using telemedecine technology perform a proper diagnosis using experts at a central probably urban location.

Here is an exsample using telemedicine to perform a emergency craniotomy at remote location. I believe it would not be to hard to exchange the emergency doctors hands with at set of Robotic hands.

Wal-Mart is most certainly a publicly traded company, traded on the NYSE under ticker symbol WMT, and is at the very top of the Fortune 500 for 2006.
