BOINC has a problem calculating the available space on NTFS drives containing compressed files.
Example :
HD size = 5 GB
BOINC folder size = 5 GB (NTFS compressed to 2.5 GB - the 5GB came from Climate models)
Free HD space = 2.5 GB
BOINC assumes that the HD is full in that situation.
There would be a quick & dirty solution to allow more than 100% in the "Use no more than xx%" setting but somehow I didn't manage to submit this as a bug, the BOINC devs say that it is a feature :-/

Hmmm!!!
My disk is FAT32 with no compression :-|
I am trying to look at the same data for Seti@home to do a comparison, but up to now I cannot open the "Last contact" link for it.
For Einstein, I have 0.065... GB free ?!?!?!
But my disk has 1.66 GB free?!?! I don't understand this difference!!
I think, in the client message there should be some more informations (i.e. "Client needs XX GB space free to run")!
It is not the link "last contact" itself but the link below that.
btw.: 1.66GB - 0.2GB (leave at least ...)
If you right-click the BOINC folder in the windows explorer and select "properties" from the context menu, which size does it show there? On FAT file systems that can be more than the cumulated size of the files as the allocated size for each file grows in chunks of a fixed size.

Yes, I know which is the link ;-)
The fact is that I can open it from Einstein site, but not the correspondent from SETI site!
Boinc directory is 36.5 MB on disk, with Einstein and SETI projects (no data for Einstein however now!).
Boinc client says about disk usage: 1.65 GB free and 20.81 MB used by Boinc.
And SETI runs without any problem!
I am at work, my disk is 36.3 GB and there are 1.65 GB free. My prefs are:
Use no more than 1 1 -- 1 GB disk space
Leave at least 0.2 0.2 -- 0.2 GB disk space free
Use no more than 50 50 -- 80 % of total disk space
Your total disk space is 36.3GB.
80% of 36.3GB is 29GB.
36.3 - 29 = 7.3GB is what you need to have free on that disk for BOINC to work.
Less even as you are reserving 200MB with the "Leave at least" preference.
The "Use no more than x% of total disk space" is measured over the total disk space available. If you didn't make a separate partition of 1GB, then all preferences here are about that 36.3GB.
So it's not that you tell BOINC it can use only 1GB, needs to leave 200MB free and use no more than 80% of the 1GB...
How to get around this?
Increase the disk space BOINC can use or increase the maximum percentage on the total disk space setting.
Although I dont have issues with insufficient disk space, I would like to know if there is a way to specify which particular disk drive BOINC uses. When I initially installed BOINC it defaulted to using my C drive, but I have another disk drive on my system which is almost entirely free that I would love to use for this project. I saw no option that allows me to choose which drive to use. Thanks for any information given about this.

Sorry, but Boinc works because Seti@home works! It downloads WU!
Einstein doesn't!
What I understand is: the client can use up to 1 GB, or up to 80% of disk space, leaving 0.2 GB free. This means that I should have at least 1.2 GB free, because 80% of disk space is a much more than 1 GB and the limit should be the lowest value, isn't it?.
But I have 1.6 GB free! And Einstein says that there are only 65 MB free for Boinc!
I have just now tried this sets:
20 GB/0.1 GB/100%
0.2 GB/0.1 GB/100%
20 GB/0.1 GB/10%
20 GB/20 GB/100%
0.2 GB/20 GB/100%
20 GB/20 GB/10%
0.2 GB/0.1 GB/10%
0.2 GB/20 GB/10%
Each time I get "No work sent" message, because
27/02/2007 14.57.17|Einstein@Home|Message from server: Not enough disk space (only 65.4 MB free for BOINC). Review preferences for maximum disk space used.
or similar!!
I don't understand how Einstein calculates the free space for Boinc!!!
SETI already has downloaded the program and graphics and DLLs it needs.
Einstein has to download everything new and those "super-workunits" (data sets containing several workunits) are bigger than the SETI ones.
It's BOINC that calculates the disk space requirements, not the Einstein program.
My last three ideas (... well, I will think about more if it's not that ;-) Remote diagnostics is not so easy :
Is your windows swap file of a fixed size or is it variable? Maybe the space Windows reports to BOINC respects some spare space it will be used to increase the swap space. Fixed swap space size is usually faster too so it's always good to have upper and lower limit set to the same value.
Is your Windows waste basket quite stuffed? The files in there still use space, even though that space is not directly visible.
Have you tried a scandisk/checkdisk from the windows explorer ("properties" in the drives context menu)? A FAT file system might hold some lost clusters that it will convert to file0000.chk, file0001.chk and so on in the C:\\ root directory.
@Terry : My team mates have reported that you can just move the complete BOINC installation to a different partition. I have done that already but I adjusted all references in the registry to point to the new place, which I think is safer - just in case.
No way to move just the projects and slots directories away from the BOINC root folder, BOINC does not offer that choice.
Thank you Ananas for your suggestions!
But...
1) I have a variable swap file: in these days I have checked it a bit, and it never went over 700 MB. Even when restarting the PC, so swap is at 256 MB, I got no data!
2) My waste basket is empty: I always use Shift+Canc to delete files; however it reserves 1% of disk space (about 370 MB).
3) No .chk files around! most of .tmp deleted! No Internet Explorer temporary files (I use Firefox)!
Now I have about 2.65 GB of free disk space, but I am still suffering this message from Einstein...
"14/03/2007 13.31.33|Einstein@Home|Message from server: Not enough disk space (only 57.1 MB free for BOINC). Review preferences for maximum disk space used."
I tried some other settings for preferences, but no use!!!
Really, I can't believe Einstein must use so much disk space!
In last log I can read:
"[HOST#799791] got request for 1514.356188 seconds of work; available disk 0.057122 GB"
This availability I don't understand! Why only 0.057122 GB?!? It's two weeks that I always get this message, even with 1.6 GB of free disk space!
Now it seems: space usable = 2.65 GB (free disk) - 0.37 GB (waste basket) - 0.9 GB (max virtual memory) - 0.064 GB (max Win register) - 0.05 GB (space to leave free, from prefs) = 1.266 GB free,
or do I forget anything?
Sorry for my annoying, but I would like to see Einstein working again!

You can disable the recycle bin if you want to. Right click on the icon on the desktop, Properties, C: drive (or any other drive), check the checkbox not to move files to the recycle bin and OK out.
