If S5 doesn't start up as soon as this current batch is done (1,040,521 units and counting down) then may I suggest jumping over to Rosetta for awhile. David Baker and the crew have really put things together and are receiving far fewer errors than they were say 3-5 months ago.

For those of you who don't know; Rosetta is currently working on the CASP7 Project.

Also Moderator9 set up a wonderful project information index Here.

Thanks in advance for helping out.

If you read the Number

If you read the Number Crunching forum, they will smoothly transition to S5. It's already in the works to go.

Let me guess your a PETA member.

Most testing is done on Lab Rats. Has been that way for a long time. So before you preach stop the animal testing, think of all the vaccines and other wonderful things that have been possible with the testing. I think personally its worth it to save the lifes of children and adults as well.

Besides you might want to read into the medical programmes, most are doing protien foldings, which will help not use as many animals in testing. As the modeling can be accuratly tested before going to the animals, if at all.

BOINC Medical projects could possibly help eliminate the need for animal testing...As well as provide medical knowledge that could benefit animals as well as humans.

I agree that at times animal

I agree that at times animal testing can be, or can seem to be, cruel. The next time you are ill, be sure to match your actions to your convictions by telling the doctors that you do not wish to take advantage of any modern drugs developed in the last 35 years (which required animal testing in order to be approved) which you may require for cancer, HIV, diabetes (insulin) or virtually any other ailmment. Antibiotics that have saved countless millions of lives should be on your list of meds you object to. Open heart surgery, organ transplant, prosthetic replacement or augmentation of limbs and dialysis are other proceedures you should not take advantage of either, as they are only possible because of animal testing.

If you truly object to animal testing you should deny yourself any of the benefits of such testing or your convictions are hollow. In addition, you had better become a vegan (not just vegetarian) since many more millions of food animals are killed every year than lab animals and the cows, chickens, etc., are born, live and die in much more stressful and inhumane manners.

I and many family members and friends are alive today as a result of treatments and medications made possible by animal testing. I suspect the same is true for you and yours.

The next time someone close to you is ill, I dare you to tell them to their face that you object to the treatment that will soon be helping them because of the manner in which it was developed. I'll wager everything I own that your objection to animal testing will seem silly at that moment and that you'll be darned glad that animal testing has provided a means to save that person's life or heal them.

Testing on animals will never

Testing on animals will never be illegal everywhere at once. Big pharma will just go wherever they can get away with it. The best strategy is to support all efforts to develop alternatives, including computational ones.

It remains to be seen how

It remains to be seen how much of the results of drug testing on animals can be transferred to men. In a recent issue od Medscape Pharmacy a study is cited which states that in American hospitals Adverse Drug Reaction ranks from fourth to sixth as cause of death. A recent case of drug testing in UK brought serious illness and almost death to six volunteers. The genetic drug had proven safe on animals.

Never the less, it is

Never the less, it is undeniable that the advances that have been made so far can be attributed in no small part to animal testing, imperfect as it may be. The vaccines for Polio, TB, measles, smallpox and other diseases that have together wiped out hundreds of millions of people all over the world were developed using extensive animal testing. The sacrifice of those noble animals (a true sentiment of mine) helped pave the way for tools to save billions of lives since their development and for the generations to come. The animals provide a model for performance and behavior of substances and no model is perfect. They provide analogs, not equivalents. There will always be missteps and downright failures until other modeling and prediction mechanisms can be found.

This is, in part, what Rosetta, Folding and Predictor are striving for. It strikes me that a person who stands against animal testing might want to dedicate a portion of their resources to those projects. Though it is not a direct stated goal of these projects to reduce such testing, it is reasonably a long term benefit of them.

Human and animal testing will always be a part of medical research until such time as we are able to model every unique individual's predicted response to any given treatment or proceedure will be. Quite a complex model indeed. I believe that we'd be talking about Star Trek technology here.

I repeat, if you (general use) so strenuously object to animal testing, I do not feel you should be allowed access to those medicines and proceedures that such testing has allowed for.

I am not against all amimal testing. I am against useless animal testing, such as those performed by the cosmetic industry to produce beauty products.I hereby renounce to use any beauty product obtained throgh animal testing.
