Boinc stopped connecting last year and I have just now tried to fix it and can not seem to get it ti connect. The first message I get is after it tries to connect to a localhost...Boinc manager is not able to connect to a Boinc Client. Would you like to try again? When I go to file and select computer and try to connect to http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ I get the folloing message...Boinc manager unable to connect to Boinc client. Would you like to try to connect again? (I have added Boinc to the windows firewall) Nothing I have tried has worked to get me connected again. I used Seti@home for many years and last July switched to Boinc. It worked until Dec I think and then disconnected and has not worked since. I would love to get it to run again. Thank you for your assistance.

Boinc no longer can connect

A hodge podge of things to try, hope it helps....

Do you have BOINC starting at boot? If so delete it from windows startup and reboot, that works for some people...

OK, the disconnected issue means that the BOINC manager is not able to talk to the BOINC daemon. Whether or not you are uploading/downloading/crunching at this point must be determined with the task list (I do not remember how to bring this up for 95/98/me).
The usual reason for this problem is that the BOINC manager is starting and trying to talk before the BOINC daemon is ready to listen. The usual fix is to wait a minute or two and see if connecting to "" or "localhost" or "127.0.0.1" works.
If the above fails, then there is a possibility that the BOINC daemon is not starting. If that is the case, then staring it manually may help. If it is installed as a service, run "net start BOINC" from a command line. If it is installed as single or multi user, cd to the install directory, and run BOINC.exe. If it is now running, you are the victim of a bug that has hopefully been fixed in 5.1.
If it is still not working, you have a problem with one of the XML files, and you will probably have to delete the directory and start over. (I have seen this problem much less with 5.1).
You might also go to the BOINC folder and look for this file "gui rpc auth.cfg" open with word pad and change the password to one you like make sure you enter a return at the end and then save and reboot computer then try the local host entry in select computer popup..... Check your firewall.
When all screens in Boinc Manager are blank, check that Boinc.exe is running. In Windows NT/2k/XP, rightclick on the Windows taskbar and choose Task Manager. Go to the processes tab and check if Boinc.exe is running. Check how many versions of Boincmgr.exe there are running.
If more than 2 of the latter, close them all down and restart one.
If Boinc.exe isn't running, please try a reboot of the computer first.
Close down BOINC.
Navigate to your Boinc directory.
Find the file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg, open it up with a word processor and delete password, then put a blank space followed by a carriage return, save file.
Then restart BOINC.
That will most probably fix it.

Thank you for the

Thank you for the information, unfortunately most of it is geek speak. Here is what I have tried.
Deleted it from windows start up and rebooted. Did not help.
It tries to connect to Local Host but never can. I am not able to change anything once I open Boinc. It starts tring to connect as soon as it is opened and never does, just says unable to connect to local host.
I have made sure it is listed in the exceptions in the MS firewall.
It is installed as a single user.
There are no projects attached and no way to attach any since it cannot connect to the local host.
The file gui rpc auth.cfg can not be found.
Boinc is listed in the processes running in the task mgr.
I have Boinc running on my computer and everything has been working fine. It is my husbands computer that there is a problem. I am running ver 4.45. He has downloaded the new ver 5.2.13.
His computer is a Compaq Presario running XP. He has deleted and reinstalled Boinc and that did not help. We recently connected a wireless router to our DSL router. We are both hooked up to that in the same manner. He would really like to make Boinc work but we are at a loss and are not computer wizards.
What do you mean by Boinc daemon, where is the XML directory are you talking about?

Do you have the NEW version

Do you have the NEW version listed in MS firewall? There may have been a change. Try deleting Boinc from the firewall list and restart it. See if it asks you for access.

It did not ever ask for

It did not ever ask for access. I checked the firewall saw that it was not listed so added to the list. It is the new version because I did it after I reinstalled Boinc.

RE: The file gui rpc

The file gui rpc auth.cfg can not be found.

On my computer, with a similar installation, that file is c:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\gui_rpc_auth.cfg (don't forget the underscores, they're part of the file name).

Don't try to change anything while BOINC is running. Try opening the file in a text editor like Notepad, removing the password and hitting Enter, then saving it. Restart BOINC manager. If it doesn't connect do the File > Select Computer, use localhost as the host name and leave the password field blank. Click OK. You should now see BOINC Manager connecting to the BOINC Daemon (a.k.a. Client) on localhost, which is the computer it's sitting on.

Once they're talking to each other, in the menu bar go to Projects and select Attach to Project (the Project Manager isn't available yet). Follow the prompts there - this is where you need the project URL of http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/. If you have problems here, go to the Messages tab, copy the entries you see there and paste them into a reply here. They'll help tell us what BOINC is trying to do, and what's happening when it does.

The file is not there. I had done a search to find it and I did use the underscore and could not find it. I also used your directions and looked, it is not there.

I did not try to change anything while Boinc was running. I just meant that using the file/select computer, does no good because it is trying to find the local host as soon as I start Boinc.

It's trying to find it, but doesn't succeed. So your attempt is to show it the where the Daemon is sitting (on the localhost). Give it a try.

If that file doesn't exist, create it in a text editor (Notepad is perfect for this), with no content except that Enter. It should live in the main BOINC directory.

I was thinking about that myself so I went and looked in my Boinc directory and the file is not there either and mine is working fine. I am still using 4.45, should the file be there or is it only in 5.2.13?
I am not sure how to create it. This is what I think you are talking about creating.
c:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\(folder called) gui_rpc_auth.cfg (with nothing in the folder)
or should it just be a file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg.

Just want to make sure I am clear on how to do this.

Thanks for your assistance.

It's only Boinc 5.x.x versions which have this file.

I am not sure how to create it.

On the PC with 5.2.13 go Start->Programs->Accessories->Notepad.
That will open Notepad.
Put a single empty line in there (aka just hit Enter)
In Notepad, go File->Save As and point it to the BOINC directory.
Save it as gui_rpc_auth.cfg

You can check in the BOINC folder then to make sure it didn't get an extra .txt extension. If it did, rename it so the .txt entension is gone.

Very clear instructions, thank you. Unfortunately it did not work. It still cannot connect.
What next? I do appreciate everyones help, we will get it to work yet.
