Most likely that it’s running without SMT.

the ATLAS info claims the newest servers have “64 cores and 512GB memory”, which matches the specs of this system. Since the CPU is a 32 core, they must be running two of them without SMT to be reporting 64 cores on the host.

So no SMT, plus a higher clock speed, plus faster memory is likely the reason for the difference.

Ah.

I wonder if I could get the same speed up at Universe at Home?  It would be worth it if I could get u@h tasks to run in 1/3 the time they currently are.  I can throw more ram on to that box.

Oh, no.  He is making system changes again! :)

Somehow I doubt it.  If it was THAT easy....

The preliminary results using the "Yesterday" of Free-DC daily results is no.

So far the Yesterday column is consistently showing less than 3.1M which is where it was with SMT enabled.

Yes, the CPU MHz went up by about 400Hz to about 3MHz.  It was running about 2.6MHz.

I had a problem with my Internet last night so I will be running this test a couple more days to be sure.  Then re-enabling the SMT aka: hyper threading.

Well you thought changing one

Well you thought changing one variable would do it when I gave you several.

the lower core count CPU (7542) runs at higher clock speed than the 64c chips. It has half the cores with the same power budget. Probably running up to the max clock speed of 3.4GHz, and the difference in memory speed might help with the FGRPB5 tasks.

Universe scales with clock speed and threads. You got ~15% more clock speed, but cut your threads in half. It’s no surprise overall production went down.

you shouldn’t compare apples (Universe) to oranges (Einstein)

But, but, but....  they BOTH taste good :)

I tried it because I was curious. (Hey George!)  I thought it was unlikely. And it was an easy and safe change to back out.

And you raised the point of the power budget being much higher with a lower # of cores.  Which I had not thought about.

Oh, well.  Next year (2025) when I am rich(er) I will consider upgrading to Milan class cpus, maybe even to 3200 MHz ram.  I think I will avoid trying out an EVGA Rtx 3090 ti, though.    It makes more sense to spin up a multi-gpu rig instead.

Next year....  ;)

I wonder what would happen if I locked my 7742-class cpus to 32 cores.  Hmmmm.....

When I did, the CPU MHz jumped to just under 3.3MHz.  (64 cores/threads).

Then I added SMT back in and it is still running north of 3.2MHz with 128 threads.

Think I will leave it be for another day or two.

Still don't think it will produce more total production than (128c/256t) but who knows?

Apparently the Epyc 9554

Apparently the Epyc 9554 (64c/128t) on a dual CPU motherboard is enough to "equal" the production of an rtx 3080 ti.

There are 4 just entering the bottom of the top 50 list.

Maybe I'm not in sync with BOINC at the moment because I'm too busy watching football, but...

What does an EPYC CPU have to do with an RTX 3080Ti in measuring apples-to-apples?

Nothing!

Your measuring and comparing apples-to-oranges!

Comparing CPU Rac to GPU Rac

Comparing CPU Rac to GPU Rac is not apples to apples? A Rac score is a Rac score.

For more context. The EPYC

For more context. The EPYC 9554 has a 320W TDP. Two of them is 640W. Vs ~300W for a 3080Ti

not to mention that an EPYC 9554 is about 4-5x the cost of a 3080Ti on the used market.

plus they are running totally different work. Not exactly a worthwhile comparison.

Guys, a bit more excitement

Guys, a bit more excitement please :)

That a CPU that you can casually buy if your bank account allows it comes close to a quite modern top level GPU in RAC under any conditions was something that was never even thought of because why to think of something that's not going to happen.

So to see this happen now, despite the price and TDP difference, is still something amazing and testimony to how AMD changed the CPU market from stalemate to pushing, pushing, and further pushing.
