RE: If it was an optimized

If it was an optimized application obtained from a third-party, as at SETI, you would be absolutely correct. But in this case it is a "fix" provided BY THE PROJECT, and heavily recommended to just about everyone. I know that the app_info.xml file has been discussed (how to either automatically delete it or tell people that they NEED to delete it) by Bruce Allen on the BOINC developer mailing list. They knew a week ago that WHEN they stopped issuing Einstein WUs, they needed to "do something" about the xml file. My problem, as someone who spends a lot of time on many boards, attempting to offer help and support, is that a participant asked a question, and RELYING ON THE INFORMATION I HAD, I gave them the "wrong" answer.

If I, who spend several hours a day on the boards and follow all of this very closely, had no idea that the project had stopped issuing new Einstein work and was only issuing Albert work, how is someone who started BOINC three months ago and hasn't looked at it since supposed to magically know they need to do something?

Bruce, if you read this - my vote is to send the delete signal. It may not be "expected" by the rules, but this is a special case and it's the project's responsibility to take care of it.

Having recommended the Beta app to cure the "graphics bug" in scores of "Screensaver/Client error" posts, I absolutely agree with Bill on this issue. The project owes us some direction regarding "Einstein units".

In fact, I am very disappointed by the project's lack of guidance on the whole Albert process. On the other hand, I am amazed at how well "us users" seem to have "figured things out". Maybe the "Professors" have been "testing us". If so, I think we deserve an 'A'. :-)

Michael, just to be clear - I

Michael, just to be clear - I have no problem with you, your answers, what you've said, etc. - my frustration is with "project staff" on this issue. I understand they're quite busy (the Linux bug's at least been identified that's causing the heavy disk writes), but a single posting in the _CAFE_ about this just isn't good enough. I _thought_ your original "delete the file" answer was wrong and would cause the person to get graphics errors; but you were right on the money, and I was misinformed.

I read the NC boards daily on five projects, the help area on two. I don't read the Cafe expecting to find technical data, in fact the project I moderate, I chase technical questions _out_ of the Cafe, for just that reason. Actually, other than when linked there as you did earlier, I don't think I've ever _been_ in the Einstein Cafe.

Einstein to me has always been an "A" project (where SETI is a "C"). I've heard complaints recently that the communication level here has been going down to a "B" level, but I thought the people complaining were just missing things. To me, the difference between an "A" and a "B" is that an "A" project tells you what's going on _before_ it happens, a "B" project explains it after the fact. (A "C" project rarely says anything at all, and an "F" project lies about it.) We still have nothing "official" - hopefully we will soon.

I did not take it personally. Just wanted to clear things up. And
your complaint was valid.

I was dead in the water with Einstein but this tread got me going again with the new Alberts.
Thanks to all.

Ditto. Looks like I'm getting work units now. But I agree, some "hey, if you're using the Beta..." would have been helpful instead of fishing around here...
