This is one of my common strategies for word link.  Add or subtract letters from the starting word, then rearrange the result to make a new word.

Whooaa.. I think we need strict and clear rules here that define what a word link is. (I'm German, such deviations from what is expected make me really nervous).

Also, the no acronym rule is a bit of a bummer. It makes me sad you can't use SETI given the right preceding word. Or ET, for that matter. :/

Maybe, yes, no, I don't know, it depends

I see rules as guidelines, if we don't expand the transgression why worry about it, just move forward and don't make a big deal about it. Now obviously if it's a constant thing by someone or someones then it needs to be addressed but one time a month is a meh moment for me.
