Greetings from DownUnder. I'm afraid that I had to System Restore under Windows ExPee Home Edition ( sp2 updated as of today ) to an earlier Restore Point which predated the BOINC installation. The reason for restoring was not BOINC related. However this required reinstalling BOINC, and so I'm now re-attached and processing work units. Cool, so far so good, happy camping.
However I note my profile now lists 2 ( suspiciously identical looking ) computers with different ID's. Also the work units which were sent to the 'old' computer don't appear on the current worklist for the 'new' one ( well, why would they? ) and will probably hang in the breeze unfinished by either. Clearly the ID's are aliases for the same computer, and the BOINC server doesn't know that ( well, why would it? ).
So:
- Should I worry at all ( I figure probably not )?
- Do I, or can I, or should I re-request the unfinished work units ( on the 'old' ID ) to the new one. ( I figure probably no ).
- Do I, or can I, or should I remove or retire the 'old' ID. ( I figure probably yes ).

I'm not worried about losing credits or lowering averages or any of that stuff.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Real new, real keen, but bit of a hiccup

Well it's amazing how framing and expressing a problem to others helps solving it! Just merge the two ID's - I guess that's a reason why that function exists - the 'old' guy gets retired, the 'new' guy picks up the unfinished work ( it's downloading as we speak ).
So Bing/Badda/Boom, back in the groove.
Now I'm off to enlist the other three computers at home ( my teenage kid's ) for some EAH moonlight work, AND my mobile which I take to and from work! Get some serious crunching going...

Mike, I always knew we Aussies were a pretty resourceful lot and you've just amply demonstrated that. I'd really like to add my own welcome and congratulations to those of Jim K. It really is great to have you aboard!!

The ability to retransmit the "lost" work is a feature that is in the BOINC software but not implemented by all BOINC projects. EAH implements it and you showed amazing clarity of thought to analyse the whole process so correctly. You are going to be positively dangerous when you really get in the groove with this stuff!! :).

We hope you enjoy your stay here and I sincerely hope you will stick around and put that very smart brain of yours to good use helping others who might have similar situations to the one you found yourself in but who are unable to so adeptly extricate themselves :).

Very well done!!

Cheers,
Gary.

Message 20684 in response to message 20683

Hi guys! This is clearly tech-head country. It's nice to be here and thanks for the kind words.
I've got three out of four of those other computers that I mentioned before running. Splitting the infinities right now.
But my only daughter ( 15 y.o. ) has the other one. She said no and then NO again after that one ( I didn't go for Strike Three).
I think I'll have to bribe her... Christmas IS coming... yeah, she's only holding out to bump up the price... I wouldn't expect any less from half of my own genes ( thank you Richard Dawkins! )... yep, a bribe it is... it's always the safest option, never let me down yet... hmmmm, maybe a computer upgrade... now that cuts two ways, don't it?
See? I've done it again - another problem solved - and just like winning an auction I'll have to go and pay now...
Cheers.

You must have gone for strike three (or figured out the bribe) as it looks horribly like you have 4 boxes crunching away right now :). Actually, I've just reread your initial post and I think you have the initial box, three kids boxes and your laptop (5 altogether) so I guess the daughter is still holding out :).

I thought GPs were overworked and underpaid these days so how did you get the first four up and running so quickly :). I see you are up and reading these boards at 6.00am or is that 5.00am if you're in QLD :).

You do have another option :). When your daughter isn't looking, install it as a service and it will be quite invisible. BOINC does a very good job of getting out of the way when she wants to use her machine so she wont even notice that real science is being done behind her back :). You can always remotely monitor BOINC from another machine. Do you know about addons like BoincView? It's very, very good for monitoring multiple boxes on a LAN. Do you have a small LAN in your house? How does each machine connect to the internet? Do you have broadband?

Sorry for hitting you with so many questions :). It can take months to figure out some things and I'm just keen to help speed up the learning process, not that you need any help, of course :).

All jokes aside, if you intend to crunch seriously, there are a LOT of advantages to using service installs and remote management of all the clients. If you wish, I can point you towards things that would be useful to read, so just let me know if there is anything in particular that interests you.

Cheers,
Gary.

Yeah, and she's read these posts so I have "I'm going to hurt you now". She's as sharp as a real sharpy thingy whatsit .....:-)

Yes we are and yes I am. :-) Those of us left, that is :-(

Basically already done, but not related to BOINC or EAH. I've had a home network for some two years now. Off the phone line through to the broadband ( 1500K ) modem ( D-Link ) into HUB ( name of my home computer ), with a local network cable ( RJ45 - Cat 5 ) out of that to an 8-way fully switching hub ( Netgear ). From that hub same cabling to each of the three kid's ( one under the floor to the downstairs bedroom for Peter aka DEEPTHOUGHT ). Now last weekend I fell over that CERN 100 Year Einstein worldwide webcast thingy ( boy, could that have used some professional production assistance ) and found my way to EAH after some surfing from there. So I thought why not? I've got the goods which fit the script and here I am.

6am, Victoria. It's the overworked bit :-) I'll sleep when I'm dead ;-)

See sharpy stuff as above - the bleeding edge of technology.

No I didn't, and thank you I will move on that.

No problemo, feel free, please encourage and enlighten me at any level you see fit. I've always preferred asking a dumb effing question to making a dumb effing mistake.

Well now that you mention it.... do you know anywhere/anyone/anybook that explains networking properly - I mean more than from a Microsoft perspective but in generality - hardware/protocols/layers etc. I truly only know just enough not to drown, my thinking is phenomenological only and like most GP's I'm skilled at winging it. ( Whoops, don't tell the AMA I let that out ..... )

Oh ..... and my clinic ( of which I only have a quarter share ) has two offices ( separate towns ) and there is a total of 12 workstations plus server and firewall beasties. Now there's some serious horsepower under that hood, huh? And it doesn't get used at night. The BOINC usage preferences are clearly the tool for that. So methinks after sorting out the squiggles at home I might put an item on agenda for the post Christmas practice management meeting! Get 'em to sign off when hungover ehh?

Cheers

If she lives in the Australian bush, she's probably already been through one of those :).

Mike,

I thought you said she was like one of those "real sharpy thingy whatsits .....:-)". :). I reckopn you got off pretty lightly there :). You should get her two DVDs for being so kind and thoughtful :).

She probably wanted it (BOINC) all along, just figured to work Mike for some "value added" :-)
