Right now an 3700x with your choice of a video card seems to be my pick for the cheapest CPU/gpu that takes advantage of the x570 chipset.
Are there any Ryzen Apus (CPU with iGPU) that would be competitive with a 3700x?
Yes, I know this will be confusing because the Zen generations were one step behind with a naming convention that implied they were in the same Zen generation. And then Amd changed that so the name did represent the correct Zen generation (?).
Plus there are significant cache size differences between an Apu design and the CPU design.
But, does anyone have some opinions?

Are there any generation/model Intel cpus that represent a good bang for the buck for Boinc CPU processing?

Linux still has issues with the E cores on 12th Gen Intel cpus. Need to run the 5.18 kernel at the least to tackle the issue with some bit of proper utilization. Need Intel Thread Director fix.
yup, 5950X runs hotter. more performance came at the cost of higher temps and power draw.
So if you take the OC off or at least lower it, it should use less power than a 3950x at the same GHz?
Tom M
Never tried that but logically that conclusion is valid. The process improvement from Zen 2 to Zen 3 allows for lower VID at the lower clocks. But actual testing will need to be done to confirm.
Set the 5950X to 4125Mhz and run the voltage down to the lowest voltage needed to maintain stability under your loads.
And a related question. It sounds like a 5950x should generate more "production" (BOINC cpu task in my case) than a 3950x at the same same GHz. Say 4.125 for both.
Does that seem to be the conclusion you would draw?

Yes, that is a valid conclusion. The 19% performance improvement from Zen2 to Zen3 was partially a clock improvement, but part of that was via an IPC improvement.
This was tested by the online review sites failry extensively.
Quote:
Although we only saw a 5% IPC improvement in Blender for Zen 3 over Zen 2, it's important to note that this performance improvement came with a slight power saving as system usage dropped by 3%
Which would cost more? Freewill's top performing Dell ?
Or an Epyc CPU/MB of similar performance?
The benchmark I am using is Universe at Home.

Prices on Ryzen 3950x are getting down to what 3700x we're going for two years ago. Mixed feelings (I want another, but I can't afford one yet).

Well for I went over to the dark/red side yesterday and got an AMD Ryzen 5950X for AUD $800, then constructed this bad boy ( I had been an Intel bloke ). The RTX 3060 went for AUD $620. I purchased the fastest DDR4 in the shop. It's also got a Corsair H150i water cooler which keeps it at 380 C going flat chat. Also has some M.2 SSD x2 : 240GB and 1TB. It has Pop!OS ( derivative of Ubuntu ). I can't wait to see how it will perform for E@H. :-)
Cheers, Mike.
I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

probably only the very latest 12th gen stuff from intel to get the same kind of performance as zen2 or zen3.
but I'm not sure how these perform under linux or if linux can handle the e-cores, you might have to diable them for Linux.

Zen 3 IPC and power improvement over Zen 2 at the same locked clocks

Impossible to say. Was his Dell purchased new from Dell? If that is the case I would say no. Not with their markup.
